SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — Lena Girardi scored 19 points and Utah used a late fourth-quarter surge to beat Eastern Washington 76-67 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Tuesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Utes improved to 1-0, while the Eagles fell to 0-1. Attendance was 1,754.

Utah took control early. The Eagles generated more offense in the second quarter, but Utah kept answering. Peyton Jones made two 3-pointers, Bradley added a 3-pointer and a layup, and Conesa hit another 3-pointer. Eggers kept Eastern Washington within range with layups and free throws, and her 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 39-22. Madeline Gibbs made a tip-in late in the period, but Utah took a 42-24 lead into halftime. Eastern Washington’s best stretch of the half came when Eggers scored on consecutive possessions and Gibbs followed with a tip-in, but Utah’s perimeter shooting and work at the free-throw line kept the Eagles from mounting a sustained run.

Utah maintained its cushion through the third quarter. Bradley and Evans scored early in the second half, while Barros added a layup and a floating jumper. Conesa and Jones also connected from beyond the arc. Eastern Washington got a driving layup from Aby, a pullup jumper and a 3-pointer from Elyn Bowers, a 3-pointer from Kourtney Grossman and a late driving layup from Nevaeh Parrish.
