Mississippi Valley State Devilettes at Marquette Golden Eagles
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Marquette will open its women’s basketball season Tuesday when it hosts Mississippi Valley State at Bradley Center in a women’s NCAA Division I game. Both programs enter the matchup at 0-0, giving the Golden Eagles and Devilettes a clean start before their schedules begin to tighten.
Marquette will play at home after its most recent previous result, a 57-44 loss to Creighton. The Golden Eagles will look for production from their returning rotation and newcomers as they open a schedule that includes home games against Minnesota, Presbyterian, NJIT, Illinois and Butler. Marquette also is set to travel to Missouri State, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Belmont and Xavier. The opener gives Marquette a chance to establish tempo and defensive pressure before those matchups and provides an early home test at Bradley Center.
Mississippi Valley State also is 0-0. The Devilettes’ most recent previous result was a 81-74 loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Mississippi Valley State will begin a road-heavy portion of its schedule with games at Chicago State, Southern Mississippi, Lipscomb and Tennessee State before returning home to face West Georgia. The Devilettes also are listed to play at Louisiana Tech, UAB and Louisiana-Monroe, with home games against Mercer and South Carolina State later in the schedule. That stretch will test the Devilettes away from home before their first listed home date.
The game will bring contrasting scheduling challenges into the opener. Marquette will stay in Milwaukee for its first test, while Mississippi Valley State will open away from home and continue a stretch that keeps the Devilettes on the road. Both teams are 0-0, so the result will give one program its first victory of the season and send the other into its next game still seeking a win. The matchup also offers an early look at each team’s rotation, backcourt play and ability to handle early-season adjustments.
Marquette’s listed schedule includes several regional opponents, while Mississippi Valley State’s slate features a long run of road games before home dates against West Georgia, Mercer and South Carolina State. The Bradley Center matchup will be the first step in a busy opening stretch for both programs as they move through their nonconference schedules. The Golden Eagles will remain at home for their first game before moving into a schedule that mixes home and road contests. The Devilettes will face a series of road tests before returning to Mississippi Valley State for their listed home games.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a final score of Marquette 71, Mississippi Valley State 56.
