Pepperdine at South Dakota
VERMILLION, S.D. (Interstat) — A compelling nonconference women’s basketball matchup is set for Thursday when the South Dakota Coyotes host the Pepperdine Waves at the DakotaDome.
The Coyotes (24-9), riding the momentum of a dominant 80-60 win over Northern Colorado on March 22, look to continue their strong season on their home floor. They are led by guard Angelina Robles, who scored 21 points and dished five assists in that victory. Robles has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 17.6 points over her last five games.
They will face a Pepperdine squad (21-12) that arrives having won three of its last four, including an 85-80 victory over Southern Utah on March 22. The Waves are powered by guard Taija Sta Maria, who poured in 22 points in that win. Sta Maria has been a versatile contributor, averaging 11.8 points and 4.2 assists over the same five-game span.
This game serves as a quick rematch from earlier this season. On Dec. 17, Pepperdine defended its home court with a 73-65 victory over South Dakota. The Waves will aim for a regular-season sweep, while the Coyotes seek to avenge that loss and protect their home court advantage.
The contest features a contrast in recent trajectories. Pepperdine has found its rhythm offensively, scoring 80 or more points in three of its last five outings. South Dakota’s identity has been built on defensive resilience, holding opponents to 60 points or fewer in two of its last three wins.
With both teams boasting winning records and dynamic backcourt stars in Robles and Sta Maria, Thursday’s clash promises a competitive battle as each program looks to bolster its resume late in the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central Time at the DakotaDome.
