Vanderbilt Pulls Away From Illinois in Second Half
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from Illinois and secure a 75-57 victory in a nonconference matchup Monday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
A crowd of 4,440 watched the Commodores, one of the nation’s top teams this season, improve to 29-4 overall. The Fighting Illini, coming off an NCAA Tournament first-round win, saw their season end at 22-12.
The game’s decisive stretch came immediately after halftime. Leading 36-25 at the break, Vanderbilt unleashed a 24-point third quarter, fueled by the prolific scoring and playmaking of junior guard Mikayla Blakes. The Somerset, New Jersey, native scored or assisted on 17 of those 24 points, turning a competitive contest into a commanding lead. Her stepback jumper at the 6:20 mark pushed the lead to 42-34, and she later found Justine Pissott for a 3-pointer to make it 55-42 before capping the quarter with her own jumper for a 60-41 advantage heading to the fourth.
Blakes finished with a game-high 25 points and nine assists in 37 minutes, orchestrating the Vanderbilt offense with precision. Her backcourt partner, Aubrey Galvan of Deerfield, Illinois, added 12 points. Pissott, a 6-foot-4 forward from Toms River, New Jersey, provided a critical outside threat, scoring 18 points on a mix of perimeter shots and mid-range jumpers.
Illinois, the visiting team, struggled to find consistent offense against Vanderbilt’s length and defensive pressure. The Fighting Illini were held to eight points in the opening quarter and shot under 35% from the field for the game. They were led by forward Berry Wallace, a Pickerington, Ohio, native who scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a full 40 minutes. Jasmine Brown-Hagger of Shorewood, Illinois, provided a second-half spark off the bench, scoring all of her 12 points after halftime, while center Cearah Parchment of Whitby, Canada, also added 12 points.
The Commodores set the tone early, opening a 21-8 lead after one quarter. Illinois showed resilience in the second period, cutting the deficit to 11 at halftime behind Wallace’s scoring and a 3-pointer from Maddie Webber just before the intermission. But Vanderbilt’s third-quarter explosion, keyed by Blakes, extinguished any hope of an Illinois comeback.
Vanderbilt’s interior defense was also a major factor, recording nine blocks. Sacha Washington and Aiyana Mitchell, who had four blocks, anchored the paint, altering numerous Illinois attempts.
The victory continues a standout season for Vanderbilt, which entered the game as a heavy favorite according to analytics and betting markets. The Commodores’ high-powered offense, which averaged over 80 points per game during the season, proved too much for an Illinois team that had relied on defense and rebounding in its recent postseason win.
Illinois concludes its season with its most wins since the 2022-23 campaign, having reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. Vanderbilt advances, its championship aspirations firmly intact behind the stellar guard play of Mikayla Blakes.
