Duke Defeats Baylor in Women’s NCAA Tournament Second Round
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — The Duke women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance, overwhelming Baylor from the opening tip and cruising to a 69-46 victory in a nonconference matchup Sunday at a raucous Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils, improving to 26-8 on the season, established control early and never relented, holding the visiting Lady Bears to a season-low in points. Baylor, which fell to 25-9, was held to just 16 first-half points on eight points in each of the first two quarters, a deficit from which they could never recover.
The most critical phase of the game was a decisive second-quarter surge by Duke. Leading 16-8 after one period, the Blue Devils erupted for a 22-point second quarter, outscoring Baylor by 14 to take a commanding 38-16 lead into halftime. This stretch effectively decided the contest, as Baylor’s offensive struggles against Duke’s length and pressure proved insurmountable. The Lady Bears shot a frigid percentage from the field throughout the half, plagued by turnovers and blocked shots.
Duke’s dominance was fueled by a balanced and efficient offensive attack led by sophomore forward Delaney Thomas. The Charles Town, West Virginia, native scored 17 points, showcasing her versatility inside. She was complemented by a strong interior presence from freshman Toby Fournier of Toronto, who added 15 points and was a constant force on both ends.
The Blue Devils’ backcourt orchestrated the victory. Point guard Taina Mair of Boston dished out eight assists, piloted the offense, and contributed nine points, while Ashlon Jackson of China, Texas, chipped in 12 points and four assists. Duke’s defense was anchored by San Antonio native Arianna Roberson, who scored 10 points and recorded three blocks, part of a formidable team effort that stifled Baylor’s scoring attempts all afternoon.
Baylor, which entered the game on a one-game winning streak after a narrow victory over Nebraska, found little rhythm. Taliah Scott led the Lady Bears with 13 points, but the team’s offense was disjointed against Duke’s aggressive schemes. Key contributors like Darianna Littlepage-Buggs were limited to seven points, and the team committed numerous turnovers that Duke converted into easy transition opportunities.
The Lady Bears showed brief signs of life after halftime, scoring 13 points in the third quarter, but Duke answered with 16 to maintain its large margin. A 17-point fourth quarter for Baylor did little to close the gap, as the Blue Devils managed the game comfortably down the stretch. Kyla Abraham provided a bright spot off the bench for Baylor with eight points and three blocks.
The game, played before a crowd of 3,907, saw Duke outperform pregame expectations as a 12.5-point favorite, covering the spread with ease. The combined score of 115 points fell well under the projected over/under of 126.5, a testament to the defensive tenor of the contest.
With the victory, Duke secured its 26th win of the season, continuing a strong campaign that has featured notable wins over ranked opponents. Baylor will look to regroup from the defensive clinic put on by the Blue Devils as it prepares for its postseason trajectory. The result marked a reversal from the teams’ most recent meeting, a 58-52 Baylor victory in early November.
