College of Charleston at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging College of Charleston squad, boasting one of the nation’s top records, faces a major test in the NCAA tournament when the 27-5 Cougars take on the 24-8 Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Friday.

The first-round matchup pits a mid-major powerhouse against a perennial contender from the Atlantic Coast Conference on its storied home court. The Cougars, winners of nine of their last ten, enter with confidence but are heavy underdogs against a Duke team battle-tested in one of the country’s toughest leagues.

Charleston will rely on its momentum and the interior presence of Grace Ezebilo. The forward is coming off a dominant 16-rebound, 10-point performance in a 68-56 win over Hofstra on March 15. Over her last eight games, she has averaged a double-double, providing a crucial rebounding edge. She will need to be at her best against Duke’s formidable frontcourt.

The Blue Devils, who edged Louisville 70-65 in overtime on March 8 in their last outing, are led by guard Delaney Thomas. She scored 19 points in that victory and has been a consistent scorer, reaching double figures in six of her last seven contests. Her backcourt battle with Charleston’s productive duo of Taryn Barbot (23 points vs. Hofstra) and Taylor Barbot (16 points, 8 assists) will be pivotal.

Duke’s schedule strength is a significant factor. Their eight losses came against ACC foes, including narrow defeats to Clemson and North Carolina. Charleston’s record is impressive, but its most notable non-conference result was a 12-point loss to Monmouth in February.

The atmosphere at Cameron Indoor Stadium, a noted advantage for Duke, presents a unique challenge for the visiting Cougars. Charleston’s ability to handle that pressure, control the glass through Ezebilo, and get efficient guard play will determine if they can pull off the upset and continue their historic season.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT on Friday, March 20.
