Hampton vs. Elon

Preview: Hampton vs. Elon in CAA Women’s Basketball Championship

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The Elon Phoenix and Hampton Pirates meet Thursday in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Championship, with both teams seeking to extend their seasons at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.

Elon (15-15), the higher-seeded home team per conference designation, enters the tournament having split its final six regular-season games. The Phoenix closed with a 66-54 home victory over UNC Wilmington on March 7, powered by a career-high 28 points from senior guard Quinzia Fulmore. Fulmore has been a consistent offensive threat, averaging 16.3 points over her last three contests.

Hampton (10-20) arrives having lost eight of its last nine games, including a heartbreaking 61-60 defeat to William & Mary in its regular-season finale. The Pirates have struggled offensively, failing to reach 60 points in six of those eight losses.

The teams met twice during the conference slate, with Elon securing decisive victories on both occasions. The Phoenix won 84-75 at home on Jan. 4 and 79-53 at Hampton on Jan. 26.

A key matchup will feature Hampton’s leading scorer, guard Kiarra Mcelrath, against Elon’s Fulmore. Mcelrath has been a bright spot for the Pirates, scoring 20 or more points in three of her last seven games, including a 20-point effort in a win at Northeastern on March 1. Containing Fulmore, who shot 10 of 16 from the field in the last meeting, will be a primary defensive focus for Hampton.

Elon will look to leverage its interior presence and more balanced scoring attack, while Hampton must find supplementary offense beyond Mcelrath and improve upon its 51-point performance in a loss at Campbell on March 5.

The winner advances to face top-seeded Stony Brook in the quarterfinals on Friday. For Elon, a victory would secure a .500 season. For Hampton, it represents a chance to salvage a difficult year with a postseason run.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT Thursday.
