Tarleton State Rallies Past Utah Valley in Western Athletic Conference Tournament Thriller

LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensive struggle defined by a dominant paint presence, the Tarleton State Texans edged the Utah Valley Wolverines 60-57 on Thursday afternoon in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament game at Orleans Arena.

The victory, sealed by two clutch free throws from Elodie Lutbert with four seconds remaining, avenged two regular-season losses to Utah Valley and advanced the Texans to the next round. Tarleton State improved to 14-16 overall, while Utah Valley’s season ended at 15-14.

The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the final half-minute with the score tied at 57. After a Utah Valley shot clock violation gave Tarleton State possession with 31 seconds left, the Texans worked the ball to Kyriana Jones, who drained a critical 3-pointer from the wing with 31 seconds on the clock, assisted by Lutbert, to put Tarleton State ahead 60-57.

Utah Valley called timeout and designed a play for its interior players. Halle Nelson’s driving layup attempt was emphatically blocked by Lutbert with 17 seconds left. The Wolverines retained possession and got another look inside, but Gracie Sorenson’s hook shot missed. Lutbert secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled by Amanda Barcello with four seconds to go. The 6-foot-6 freshman from Sainte-Luce, Martinique, calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to three.

Utah Valley’s final desperation heave from beyond the arc by Barcello was off target as time expired.

The contest was a stark contrast to the teams’ previous meetings this season, both comfortable Utah Valley wins. This time, Tarleton State’s defense, anchored by Lutbert, controlled the interior. Lutbert finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots in just 25 minutes, imposing her will on both ends of the floor. Her performance was a dramatic escalation from her recent outings, including a two-point effort just a week prior.

Utah Valley was led by Kaylee Headrick’s 17 points and seven rebounds, while Amanda Barcello added 15 points and Cambree Blackham dished out seven assists. However, the Wolverines were plagued by inefficient offense, shooting just 36.8% from the field and 25% from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 78.0 on 73 possessions underscored the struggle against Tarleton’s physical defense.

The Texans, who shot 43.1% from the field, also won despite committing 17 turnovers, one more than Utah Valley. The difference came in the key moments of the fourth quarter and the interior battle, where Tarleton State outscored Utah Valley 20-11 in the final period after trailing by as many as eight points in the first half.

Utah Valley led 32-25 at halftime, capitalizing on Tarleton State’s early turnovers. The Wolverines’ lead was still seven points entering the fourth quarter at 46-39. But the Texans chipped away, with Lutbert, Caroline Lyles (11 points) and Jakoriah Long (11 points) providing crucial scoring. A 7-0 run midway through the final quarter gave Tarleton State its first lead since the opening minutes, setting the stage for the tense finish.

The win moves Tarleton State forward in the conference tournament, a feat that seemed unlikely after the regular-season results against Utah Valley. The Texans will face California Baptist on Friday, continuing their postseason journey in Las Vegas.
