Notre Dame vs. Duke
DULUTH, Ga. (Interstat) — A marquee women’s basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Saturday when Duke hosts Notre Dame at Gas South Arena.
Both teams enter March 7 with identical 22-win records, though Duke (22-8) holds a slight edge in the loss column over Notre Dame (22-9). The contest is a rematch of a Jan. 4 meeting in Durham, North Carolina, where the Blue Devils dominated the Fighting Irish 82-68.
The game features two of the nation’s top players in opposing roles. Notre Dame is powered by dynamic guard Hannah Hidalgo, who enters on a scoring tear. Over her last eight games, Hidalgo is averaging 26.1 points and 5.9 assists, including a 30-point effort in a win at Louisville and 25 points in Friday’s victory at North Carolina State.
Duke will counter with forward Toby Fournier, a versatile force who impacts the game on both ends. Fournier is coming off a 17-point, 10-rebound performance in a win over Clemson and has recorded three double-doubles in her last seven contests, while also serving as a rim protector.
Notre Dame arrives with momentum, riding a seven-game winning streak since its loss to Duke in January. The Fighting Irish’s offense has averaged 75.4 points during the run. Duke has won five of its last six, with its defense holding opponents to an average of 52.8 points in those five victories.
The outcome will likely hinge on the key matchup: Can Duke’s defense, anchored by Fournier, contain Hidalgo’s prolific scoring and playmaking? Conversely, can Notre Dame find an answer for Fournier’s interior presence and disrupt a Blue Devils team that has already proven it can handily beat them this season?
Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST at Gas South Arena. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
