Grambling Women Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Mississippi Valley State
GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — A dominant second-half performance propelled the Grambling Lady Tigers to an 84-59 victory over the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Monday night at Fredrick Hobdy Assembly Center.
The game, witnessed by 575 fans, was effectively decided in the third quarter. Leading by just eight points at halftime, Grambling erupted for 27 points in the period while holding Mississippi Valley State to 15, transforming a competitive contest into a decisive rout.
The most important part of the game was Grambling’s overwhelming third-quarter surge, which showcased a decisive shift in both offensive execution and defensive pressure. After a first half where the Devilettes managed to stay within striking distance, the Lady Tigers opened the second half on a 12-2 run, fueled by their defensive intensity. Grambling forced five Mississippi Valley State turnovers in the quarter’s first four minutes, converting those mistakes into easy transition baskets. This stretch broke the game open, extending a 31-26 halftime lead to a commanding 58-41 advantage entering the final period. The Lady Tigers never looked back, maintaining their intensity to secure the 25-point conference win.
Shaniah Nunn, a 6-foot guard from Birmingham, Alabama, led all scorers with 19 points for Grambling, adding two assists in 24 minutes of action. Her backcourt partner, Alieghya Bartholomew of Toronto, contributed 10 points and four assists, setting the tone with her playmaking. The Lady Tigers’ depth was on full display as Arianna Mosley added 13 points and Alisha Murray chipped in nine points and two assists.
For Mississippi Valley State, Sydnei Marshall of Memphis, Tennessee, shouldered the offensive load, scoring 17 points in 32 minutes. Jaeda Murphy, a 5-foot-3 guard from Chicago, Illinois, provided support with 14 points and three assists in a team-high 36 minutes.
Grambling established control early, using a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter to build a lead it would not relinquish. The Devilettes, however, showed resilience in the second quarter. Trailing by 11, they closed the half on a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Sydney Thompson three-pointer, to cut the deficit to 31-26 and create a sense of momentum heading into the break.
That momentum was swiftly extinguished. Grambling’s defensive pressure ratcheted up immediately in the third quarter, creating a cascade of fast-break opportunities. The Lady Tigers shot efficiently from the field during their game-breaking run, while simultaneously stifling the Devilettes’ offensive sets. The quarter concluded with Grambling holding a 58-41 lead, effectively sealing the outcome.
The fourth quarter saw Grambling continue to extend its advantage, eventually leading by as many as 28 points before settling on the final margin. The Lady Tigers’ balanced attack and relentless defense after halftime proved too much for a Mississippi Valley State team that struggled to maintain its first-half composure.
With the victory, Grambling improved its season record to 10-17 overall. The Lady Tigers will look to build on this performance when they host Bethune-Cookman on Thursday. Mississippi Valley State, which fell to 6-20, will aim to regroup on the road at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.
