Omaha Rallies Past Denver for Summit League Road Win

DENVER (Interstat) — In a season defined by struggle, the Omaha Mavericks found a rare moment of resilience on the road Wednesday night. Overcoming a furious second-half rally by Denver, the Mavericks closed the game on a decisive run to secure a 65-58 victory in a Summit League women’s basketball game at Magness Arena.

The win, just the fourth of the season for Omaha, snapped a two-game skid and was forged by a dramatic shift in momentum. The Mavericks, who entered as significant underdogs with Interstat’s ELO system giving them only a 22.2 percent chance to win, controlled the first half but nearly saw the game slip away after halftime.

Omaha built a commanding 33-16 lead by intermission, stifling the Denver offense to just nine points in the first quarter and seven in the second. The Mavericks’ defense was the story early, forcing 10 first-half turnovers and limiting the Pioneers to 6-of-26 shooting from the field before the break.

The trajectory of the game changed violently in the third quarter. Denver, led by a spectacular offensive outburst from guard Coryn Watts, exploded for 23 points in the period. Watts, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Aurora, Colorado, scored 14 of her game-high 25 points during the quarter, spearheading a 23-9 run that saw the Pioneers erase the 17-point deficit and take a 39-38 lead late in the frame. The Pioneers’ run was fueled by increased defensive pressure, resulting in eight Omaha turnovers in the quarter.

Facing a complete collapse, Omaha steadied itself in the fourth quarter. With the score tied at 45 with under six minutes to play, the Mavericks embarked on the game-deciding surge. The pivotal sequence was a personal 8-0 run by guard Sarai Estupiñan, who hit a critical three-pointer, converted a driving layup, and sank three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt. That spurt gave Omaha a 53-45 lead with 4:42 remaining, a cushion Denver could not overcome.

Estupiñan, a 5-foot-5 guard from Cedar Park, Texas, led Omaha with 24 points, including 12 in the final quarter. Her backcourt mate, Regan Juenemann, added 16 points, while Ali Stephens contributed 13 points and a game-high four steals. The Mavericks, who shot just 44.9 percent from the field, won the game from beyond the arc, connecting on 12 of 25 three-point attempts compared to Denver’s 6-of-18 shooting from deep.

Watts finished with 25 points, four assists and three steals for Denver. Victoria Baker added 14 points and five assists, and Brooke Murrell posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Despite their third-quarter surge, the Pioneers were hampered by 14 turnovers and 12-of-20 shooting from the free-throw line.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably Omaha’s response to Denver’s overwhelming third-quarter rally. After being outscored by 14 points and surrendering the lead, the Mavericks displayed a composure absent in many of their 23 losses this season. They committed only two turnovers in the final quarter, compared to Denver’s five, and executed their offense efficiently down the stretch. Estupiñan’s clutch scoring burst, directly answering Denver’s momentum, transformed the game from a potential devastating collapse into a character-building road victory.

With the win, Omaha improves to 4-23 overall. Denver falls to 9-16. Both teams continue Summit League play on Saturday, with Omaha traveling to face St. Thomas and Denver visiting Oral Roberts. The two teams will meet again in Omaha on Feb. 28.
