Anderson’s Triple-Double Leads Georgia Southern Past Arkansas State

STATESBORO, Ga. (Interstat) — A dominant first-quarter performance by Georgia Southern proved too much for Arkansas State to overcome as the Eagles secured a 69-60 victory in a Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Georgia Southern, improving to 17-6 overall, erupted for 27 points in the opening period while holding the visiting Red Wolves to just nine, establishing a commanding 18-point lead that Arkansas State spent the rest of the evening trying to erase. The Eagles’ early surge was fueled by a stifling defense that forced eight Arkansas State turnovers and blocked three shots in the first ten minutes, converting those opportunities into easy transition baskets.

The Red Wolves, who fell to 20-6, showed resilience after the initial onslaught. They outscored Georgia Southern 15-12 in the second quarter and 22-18 in the third, trimming the deficit to as few as nine points on multiple occasions. A key sequence in the third quarter saw Arkansas State’s Bella Weary connect on a 3-pointer, but a subsequent technical foul assessed to Weary allowed Georgia Southern’s McKenna Eddings to sink two free throws, halting the Red Wolves’ momentum and keeping the Eagles in control.

Arkansas State’s push continued into the fourth quarter, closing to within 63-60 after a pair of free throws from Aniyah Ruddock with 20 seconds remaining. Georgia Southern’s Kyla Bryant, however, made one of two free throws on the ensuing possession to extend the lead to four. After an Arkansas State timeout, a driving layup attempt by Crislyn Rose was off the mark, and Eddings secured the defensive rebound before being fouled. Eddings made the first of two free throws with 2.2 seconds left to seal the nine-point victory.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the first quarter, where Georgia Southern established its decisive advantage. The Eagles opened the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back, shooting efficiently and capitalizing on Arkansas State’s mistakes. The Red Wolves’ comeback efforts, while persistent, were consistently met with answers from the Eagles, particularly from forward Kishyah Anderson, who anchored the defense and provided timely scoring.

Anderson, a sophomore from Phoenix, Arizona, was the game’s standout performer, recording a double-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and a remarkable six blocked shots. Her presence in the paint altered countless Arkansas State attempts and was central to the Eagles’ defensive game plan. Guard Destiny Garrett added 14 points, four rebounds and two assists for Georgia Southern, while McKenna Eddings contributed 12 points, five assists and three rebounds.

For Arkansas State, guard Mia Tarver of Salt Lake City led the way with 19 points, three rebounds and a block. Bella Weary provided a spark off the bench with seven points and three rebounds in 16 minutes.

The announced attendance was 1,872. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Arkansas State entered the game with a 57.3 percent probability to win.
