Kent State Holds Off Appalachian State in Tight Women’s Basketball Contest
KENT, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless defensive pressure and squandered opportunities, the Kent State women’s basketball team held off a persistent Appalachian State squad for a 68-63 victory on Saturday at the Memorial Athletics Center.
The Golden Flashes, improving to 11-12 overall, built a double-digit lead in the first half but could never fully shake the Mountaineers, who fell to 10-13. The contest was a statistical oddity, with both teams finishing with identical totals in assists (13) and steals (13), while Kent State’s 22 turnovers nearly matched Appalachian State’s 21.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final three minutes. With Kent State clinging to a 60-58 lead, the Golden Flashes’ defense catalyzed a decisive 6-0 run. Journey Hildebrand stole the ball from Appalachian State’s Jada Burton, leading to a Tatiana Thomas layup off an Emory Klatt assist. After another Burton turnover, forced by an Emory Klatt steal, Thomas struck again with a driving layup to push the lead to 64-58 with 2:28 remaining.
Appalachian State, which had battled back from a 12-point second-quarter deficit, went scoreless for over three minutes during that stretch, missing two field goals and committing two of their 21 turnovers. The Mountaineers’ offensive struggles were epitomized by a 2-for-14 performance from three-point range.
Kent State’s ability to convert at the free-throw line ultimately sealed the win. After Appalachian State’s Daisia Mitchell converted a three-point play to cut the lead to 66-63 with seven seconds left, Kent State’s Dionna Gray calmly sank two free throws with one second on the clock to provide the final margin.
The Golden Flashes were led by a balanced effort. Tatiana Thomas, the team’s top star, filled the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and a disruptive five steals. Journey Hildebrand of Brunswick, Ohio, led all scorers with 17 points and added eight rebounds. Anna Campanelli contributed 13 points, while Riley Rismiller and Caitlyn Holmes each chipped in 10 points.
Appalachian State’s effort was spearheaded by Daisia Mitchell. The 6-foot guard from Riverside, California, scored a team-high 18 points to go with five rebounds. The Mountaineers dominated inside, outscoring Kent State 40-26 in the paint, thanks in part to 14 offensive rebounds. Addie Biel provided a significant spark off the bench, scoring 14 points in just 13 minutes. Feryal Defne Atli, the 6-foot-3 forward from Mersin, Turkey, added 12 points.
Kent State opened the game strong, shooting 50% from the field in the first quarter to take a 21-17 lead. They extended that advantage to 39-30 by halftime, capitalizing on Appalachian State’s cold shooting. The Mountaineers, however, surged in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Flashes 20-14 behind Mitchell’s aggressive drives and Biel’s interior presence to close the gap to 53-50 entering the final period.
The fourth quarter featured five ties and lead changes before Kent State’s final defensive stand and clutch free throws secured the win. The Golden Flashes finished 17 of 23 from the charity stripe, compared to Appalachian State’s 11 of 16.
Kent State, which entered the game with an 88.5% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, next travels to face Ohio on Feb. 14. Appalachian State returns home to host James Madison on Feb. 11.
