South Alabama at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to halt prolonged slides will meet Saturday when the South Alabama Jaguars visit the Western Michigan Broncos in a nonconference women’s basketball matchup at University Arena.

South Alabama (9-13) enters on a six-game losing streak, most recently falling 69-60 to Marshall on Wednesday. The Jaguars have struggled offensively during the skid, failing to reach 61 points in five of those losses.

Guard Amyah Sutton has been a bright spot, averaging 11.1 points per game. She is coming off a strong 19-point, five-assist performance against Marshall. Forward Cordasia Harris, who added 16 points in that loss, provides an interior presence.

Western Michigan (6-14) has lost seven of its last eight games, including a 76-37 road defeat to Ohio on Wednesday. The Broncos have been plagued by scoring droughts, failing to surpass 61 points in any of their last six contests.

Guard Mary Clare Brusek, who scored 10 points against Ohio, will be a key contributor for the Broncos. She will need support from Kailey Starks (12 points vs. Ohio) and Olivia Flynn to bolster an offense averaging just 54.2 points during its recent 1-7 stretch.

This game represents a rare break from conference play for both programs. South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt, while Western Michigan is a member of the Mid-American Conference.

Historically, the Broncos have dominated the series, holding a 5-1 all-time advantage. Their last meeting was a 73-58 Western Michigan victory on Dec. 19, 2020.

Following this contest, South Alabama returns to Sun Belt action against Texas State on Feb. 12. Western Michigan resumes MAC play at home against Miami (Ohio) on Feb. 10.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST Saturday.
