Charleston Southern Routs South Carolina Upstate in Big South Women’s Basketball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — The Charleston Southern Buccaneers seized control from the opening tip and never relented, cruising to an 85-62 victory over the South Carolina Upstate Spartans in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game Friday night at the G.B. Hodge Center.
The Buccaneers, who led wire-to-wire, improved to 7-15 overall. The Spartans fell to 6-17.
Charleston Southern’s offensive execution was crisp and consistent across all four quarters. The Buccaneers built a 41-27 halftime lead by scoring 20 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second. They extended their advantage after the break, adding 23 points in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth. South Carolina Upstate, conversely, was held to 14, 13, 20 and 15 points in the respective periods, unable to mount a sustained challenge.
The most important sequence of the game arrived early, setting a decisive tone. After South Carolina Upstate’s Aijah Palmore opened the scoring with a layup, Charleston Southern’s backcourt duo ignited. Tyonna Bailey, assisted by Asha Sra, sank a three-pointer on the ensuing possession. Just over 30 seconds later, Bailey struck again from beyond the arc, this time off a feed from Caelan Ellis. Following a Spartans basket, Sra found Bailey for another three, capping a personal 9-point run for Bailey and giving Charleston Southern an 11-4 lead less than three minutes into the contest. This explosive start established a commanding rhythm from which the Spartans never recovered.
Bailey, a guard from Newark, New Jersey, led all scorers with 28 points in 36 minutes of action. She was instrumental in the early barrage and remained a constant offensive threat throughout. Her backcourt partner, Caelan Ellis of Powder Springs, Georgia, provided a potent secondary punch, finishing with 21 points and three assists.
The Buccaneers’ offense flowed through point guard Asha Sra of Fresno, California, who directed the attack with precision. In her 36 minutes, she tallied 12 points and dished out a game-high eight assists, consistently breaking down the Spartans’ defense to create opportunities for her teammates.
For South Carolina Upstate, Cassie Gallagher of Cookeville, Tennessee, offered a bright spot with a team-high 17 points, along with two assists and two blocked shots. Aubrie Kierscht of Salina, Kansas, added 13 points. Reserve post player Madison Miller of Hamburg, New Jersey, provided a brief spark off the bench, scoring nine points in just seven minutes of play, but the Spartans’ overall offensive efforts were too sporadic to close the gap.
Charleston Southern’s defense was equally impactful, generating turnovers and contesting shots consistently. The Buccaneers’ ability to translate defensive stops into quick offensive opportunities, as evidenced by their early three-point flurry, was the cornerstone of the victory.
The game was a rematch of a Dec. 31 contest, which Charleston Southern also won, 60-49. The Buccaneers have now won two straight conference games, following a victory over Presbyterian on Jan. 23. South Carolina Upstate has lost three consecutive games since a win over Presbyterian on Jan. 14.
An announced crowd of 124 attended the game at the 878-seat G.B. Hodge Center.
Charleston Southern returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 4, hosting UNC Asheville. South Carolina Upstate travels to face Presbyterian on the same date.
