Missouri State Routs Delaware in Conference USA Women’s Basketball
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — The Missouri State Lady Bears used a dominant first half and a balanced scoring attack to cruise past the Delaware Blue Hens 79-54 in a Conference USA women’s basketball game Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Missouri State, now 13-7 overall, seized control from the opening tip, building a 39-19 halftime lead that Delaware, which fell to 9-11, could never seriously challenge. The Lady Bears’ defense was stifling early, holding the Blue Hens to just eight points in the first quarter and 19 total in the opening half.
The most important part of the game was Missouri State’s immediate and overwhelming defensive pressure in the first quarter, which set the tone for the entire contest. The Lady Bears forced Delaware into a series of rushed shots, turnovers, and offensive fouls, allowing the Blue Hens to score just two field goals in the first six minutes. By the time Kendal Brueggen hit a three-pointer just before the first-quarter buzzer, Missouri State had established an 18-8 lead, and Delaware never recovered from that early deficit.
Lainie Douglas, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Overland Park, Kansas, anchored the Lady Bears’ effort with 17 points and a key block in 25 minutes of action. Her presence inside disrupted numerous Delaware attempts at the rim. She was complemented by backcourt mates Kaemyn Bekemeier, who also scored 16 points, and Kendal Brueggen, who added 16 points off the bench, including a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
Delaware’s offense, which managed only 19 points in the first half, found a brief spark in the third quarter behind the efforts of Safi Kolliegbo and Ande’a Cherisier. The Blue Hens outscored Missouri State 23-14 in the period, cutting the lead to 53-42 heading into the final frame. Kolliegbo, a guard from Willingboro, New Jersey, finished with a game-high 20 points, while Cherisier, a forward from Baltimore, contributed 16 points and two blocks.
However, any hope of a dramatic comeback was extinguished quickly in the fourth quarter. Missouri State responded to Delaware’s third-quarter push by exploding for 26 points in the final period. The Lady Bears’ offense, which had cooled in the third, rediscovered its rhythm, shooting efficiently from the field and the free-throw line to put the game out of reach. A 9-2 run early in the quarter pushed the lead back to 18 points, and Delaware got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
Missouri State’s ball movement was sharp throughout, led by point guard JaNyla Bush, who dished out five assists. The Lady Bears also received a 10-point contribution from Maiesha Washington. Delaware was hampered by 19 turnovers, which Missouri State converted into 21 points.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 754, was a conference matchup organized by Conference USA. Missouri State entered as a strong favorite, with statistical models giving them a 72.6 percent probability to win, a projection they fulfilled with a wire-to-wire victory.
Missouri State will look to continue its momentum on the road against Liberty on Saturday. Delaware will aim to regroup at home against Florida International, also on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Springfield, Missouri, on Feb. 21.
