Eagles Outlast Lumberjacks in High-Scoring Big Sky Affair
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second-quarter swing and a relentless offensive performance, the Eastern Washington Eagles outlasted the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 93-87 in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Walkup Skydome.
The contest, played before an announced crowd of 179, saw the visiting Eagles overcome a hot-shooting start by Northern Arizona and a standout 32-point effort from Lumberjacks guard Kayla Williams to secure a crucial road victory. Eastern Washington improved its season record to 11-10, while Northern Arizona fell to 7-15.
The game’s pivotal stretch arrived in the second quarter. After a blistering first period that ended with Northern Arizona holding a 27-26 lead behind efficient three-point shooting, the Lumberjacks’ offense went cold. Eastern Washington’s defense tightened, holding Northern Arizona to just 13 points in the frame on 4-of-14 shooting from the field. Simultaneously, the Eagles’ offense found its rhythm, scoring 20 points to take a 46-40 lead into halftime. That six-point cushion, built on a 20-13 quarter advantage, proved to be the difference in a game where the other three quarters were virtually even.
Eastern Washington never relinquished that lead after halftime, consistently answering every Northern Arizona push. The Eagles showcased a balanced and efficient offensive attack, finishing the game with an offensive rating of 112.1 points per 100 possessions. They were particularly effective inside the arc and at the free-throw line, converting 21 of 23 attempts from the charity stripe.
The Eagles were led by a trio of dominant performances. Guard Elyn Bowers, the team’s top star, filled the stat sheet with 26 points, six rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes, consistently making key plays in crucial moments. She was supported by a formidable frontcourt duo. Forward Kourtney Grossman recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while center Jaecy Eggers added another with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Ella Gallatin also chipped in 20 points, five assists and two blocks, providing vital secondary scoring and playmaking.
Northern Arizona relied heavily on the scoring prowess of Kayla Williams. The junior from San Diego poured in 32 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including a remarkable 5-of-8 from three-point range. She was aided by guard Naomi White, who contributed 21 points, five rebounds and two blocks, and point guard Emma Dasovich, who dished out eight assists. The Lumberjacks shot a stellar 55% from three-point range as a team but were ultimately undone by their second-quarter drought and a significant deficit on the offensive glass, where Eastern Washington held a 9-3 advantage leading to 13 second-chance points.
Despite the loss, Northern Arizona fought until the final buzzer. Trailing by six points with under a minute to play, the Lumberjacks forced a turnover and had a chance to cut the deficit to a single possession, but a blocked three-point attempt by Naomi White in the closing seconds sealed their fate. Eastern Washington’s composure at the free-throw line in the final minute, making all four of their attempts, closed out the game.
Statistically, the game was a contrast in styles. Eastern Washington attempted 67 field goals to Northern Arizona’s 59, leveraging their nine offensive rebounds and forcing 15 Lumberjacks turnovers. Northern Arizona’s advantage came from beyond the arc, where they outscored the Eagles by nine points, but it wasn’t enough to counter Eastern Washington’s interior presence and ability to draw fouls.
The victory gives Eastern Washington momentum as they return home to face Northern Colorado on Saturday. Northern Arizona looks to regroup quickly as they hit the road to face Idaho, also on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Cheney on Feb. 28.
