Richmond at VCU
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Richmond team looks to continue its dominance over crosstown rival VCU when the women’s basketball programs meet Sunday in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup at the Siegel Center.
The Spiders (17-4, 7-1 A-10) enter on a six-game winning streak and sit atop the league standings. The Rams (8-14, 4-4), meanwhile, have struggled for consistency but are coming off a home victory.
Richmond, which won the first meeting this season 77-47 on Jan. 18, is powered by standout guard Rachel Ullstrom. She averages 19.5 points per game during the current streak, including a 20-point performance against VCU last month. In Richmond’s most recent game, an 86-55 rout of Duquesne on Wednesday, Ullstrom scored 19 points in 26 minutes.
VCU counters with guard Cyriah Griffin, who leads the team in scoring. Griffin had 15 points in the loss at Richmond and posted 11 points and six assists in Wednesday’s 69-58 win over Fordham.
The Spiders’ offense has been potent, scoring 80 or more points in five of their last six games. VCU’s defense, which allows an average of 58.9 points, will be tested to slow that pace. The Rams have shown resilience at home, however, with three of their four conference wins coming at the Siegel Center.
Historically, this rivalry has been closely contested, but Richmond has won three of the last five meetings. The Spiders’ current trajectory, featuring a deep and balanced attack, makes them a formidable opponent as they pursue an A-10 regular-season title. For VCU, the rematch represents a chance for redemption and to build momentum for the conference tournament.
Sunday’s game tips off at 2 p.m. EST. Richmond visits Saint Louis on Wednesday. VCU’s next game is at Loyola Chicago on Feb. 7.
