Preview: Texas Tech Visits BYU in Key Big 12 Women’s Basketball Clash
PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — The No. 2-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders look to rebound from their first loss of the season when they visit the BYU Cougars in a pivotal Big 12 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night.
Texas Tech (19-1, 8-1 Big 12) saw its perfect season end with a 65-59 home loss to Kansas State on Saturday. The Lady Raiders, whose dominant start included a 23-point win over then-Arizona, now face a challenging road test against a BYU team seeking a signature victory.
BYU (15-4, 4-4) has shown resilience but is coming off a 69-58 defeat to Baylor. The Cougars have split their last six games, with all losses coming against currently ranked opponents. A win over the national powerhouse Lady Raiders would dramatically bolster their postseason resume.
The matchup features two of the conference’s top guards. Texas Tech is led by Bailey Maupin, who averages 17.8 points per game. Despite the team’s loss Saturday, Maupin scored 18 points and has been a model of consistency, scoring in double figures in every game this season.
BYU counters with dynamic guard Delaney Gibb, who is averaging 18.6 points and 5.2 assists in conference play. She posted 20 points and four assists against Baylor and recorded a 21-point, eight-assist effort in a narrow loss at Arizona.
Texas Tech’s offense, which averages 71.2 points per game, will test a BYU defense allowing just 61.2 points. The Lady Raiders will need production beyond Maupin; forward Jada Malone provided a spark with 15 points off the bench in the Kansas State game.
For BYU, sustaining offensive momentum against Texas Tech’s stout defense, which ranks ninth nationally, is critical. The Cougars are 10-1 at home this season, with the lone loss to Baylor.
Wednesday’s result will have significant implications for the Big 12 standings as the season reaches its midpoint. Texas Tech aims to reclaim its momentum, while BYU looks to prove it can compete with the nation’s elite.
