Alabama A&M Tops Alabama State in SWAC Women’s Basketball
MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and physical play, the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team grinded out a 50-41 victory over rival Alabama State on Monday afternoon in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup.
The game, played before a crowd of 1,425, was a far cry from a shootout. Both teams endured prolonged scoring droughts and combined for 45 turnovers. The Bulldogs (8-9, 3-1 SWAC) never trailed, but could never fully shake the Lady Hornets (5-11, 2-2), who stayed within striking distance until the final minutes largely due to Alabama A&M’s own offensive inconsistencies.
The most important part of the game was Alabama A&M’s ability to maintain control through defense and key plays in the final quarter despite a woeful shooting performance. After taking a 35-31 lead into the fourth, the Bulldogs saw their advantage cut to 36-34 with 8:03 remaining following a Caylee Simpson layup for Alabama State. The Bulldogs responded with a critical 6-0 run, sparked by a Coriah Beck free throw and capped by a Jaida Belton layup off a Kalyn Ervin assist with 4:14 to play, pushing the lead to 42-34.
Alabama State’s Clearia Peterson, who led all scorers with 14 points, answered with a layup to make it 42-36, but the Lady Hornets would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. Alabama A&M sealed the game at the free-throw line, with Kaila Walker making four crucial foul shots in the final 24 seconds.
The Bulldogs established their intent early, opening the game on a 14-8 run in the first quarter. Alabama State found a rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring A&M 15-10 to trim the halftime deficit to just 24-23. The third quarter was a slog, with the teams combining for only 21 points, but the Bulldogs managed to extend their lead slightly to four points heading into the final period.
Belton, a 6-foot-4 junior from Baltimore, was a force inside for Alabama A&M, contributing 11 points, four blocked shots and two assists in 26 minutes. Her presence in the paint disrupted numerous Alabama State drives. Walker, a 5-5 guard from Alexander, Arkansas, led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points, including those pivotal late free throws.
For Alabama State, Peterson’s 14-point, 36-minute effort was complemented by Simpson, a 5-6 guard from Columbus, Georgia, who added 13 points. Ny’Keria Flowers distributed five assists for the Lady Hornets, but the team was plagued by 24 turnovers.
The victory gives Alabama A&M its third win in its last four conference games, while Alabama State has now dropped two of its last three SWAC contests. The Bulldogs were projected as heavy favorites by advanced metrics, but the final margin reflected the challenging nature of the rivalry game.
Both teams continue SWAC play on the road Thursday. Alabama A&M travels to face Prairie View A&M, while Alabama State heads to Texas Southern.
