Penn Holds Off Binghamton Rally in FDU Christmas Classic

HACKENSACK, N.J. (Interstat) — A dominant defensive third quarter proved decisive as the Penn Quakers held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Binghamton Bearcats to secure a 59-54 victory in a nonconference women’s basketball game Tuesday afternoon at Rothman Center.

Penn, which improved to 10-3, appeared to be in firm control after outscoring Binghamton 19-5 in the third period to take a 45-33 lead. The Quakers’ defense stifled the Bearcats, forcing seven turnovers in the quarter and holding them to just 2-of-12 shooting from the field. That surge turned a narrow 26-28 halftime deficit into a double-digit advantage.

However, the Bearcats, who fell to 8-5, refused to go quietly. They erupted for 21 points in the final quarter, spearheaded by the backcourt duo of Bella Pucci and Meghan Casey. A 10-2 run, capped by a Carletta Bennett jump shot with 4:43 remaining, pulled Binghamton within four points at 47-43. The Bearcats later trimmed the lead to just three points on two occasions in the final minute, the last at 56-53 on a Pucci 3-pointer with 35 seconds left.

Penn’s Katie Collins, the game’s standout performer, sealed the win at the free-throw line. The 6-foot-1 junior from Manasquan, New Jersey, sank two clutch free throws with 44 seconds left to extend the lead to five and added another with 24 seconds to play, finishing with a game-high 21 points. Collins also contributed seven rebounds and four blocks, anchoring Penn’s interior defense.

The Quakers survived despite shooting just 18.8% from 3-point range and 60% from the free-throw line. They compensated with a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint and scored 18 points off 13 Binghamton turnovers. Penn’s defense recorded seven blocks and seven steals.

Binghamton was led by Pucci’s 16 points and three assists, while Kendall Bennett added 15 points and nine rebounds. The Bearcats shot a respectable 41.2% from beyond the arc but were hampered by 13 turnovers and a season-low five-point third quarter.

Penn built an early 15-13 lead after the first quarter, but Binghamton responded in the second, using a 7-0 run to take a 28-23 lead late in the half before Penn’s Gabriella Kelley scored inside to make it 28-26 at intermission.

The game’s pivotal shift came immediately after halftime. Penn opened the third quarter on a 17-3 run, with Collins scoring eight points during the stretch. Binghamton went nearly six minutes without a field goal as the Quakers built their commanding lead, which ultimately withstood the late comeback attempt.

Mataya Gayle facilitated the Penn offense with five assists to go with nine points. Tina Njike provided a strong presence inside for the Quakers with eight rebounds and seven points.

The game was played at a neutral site, the Rothman Center on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University, before an announced crowd of 109.

Penn now looks ahead to its Ivy League opener against Princeton on Saturday. Binghamton will open America East Conference play at NJIT on the same day.
