Temple Women Cruise Past Western Carolina in Bahamas Showcase

NASSAU, The Bahamas (Interstat) — In a commanding performance at Imperial Arena on Sunday, the Temple women’s basketball team secured a decisive 84-64 victory over Western Carolina, snapping a three-game losing streak and improving to .500 on the season.

The Owls, now 4-4, controlled the game from the opening tip, using a dominant inside presence and efficient offense to build a lead that the Catamounts, who fell to 2-7, could not overcome.

Temple’s offense was fueled by superior shooting and a significant advantage on the glass. The Owls connected on 54.4 percent of their shots from the floor, compared to Western Carolina’s 42.6 percent. A key factor was Temple’s work in the paint, where they outscored the Catamounts 42-30, and on the offensive boards, where they held an 11-4 rebound advantage, leading to numerous second-chance opportunities.

The Owls also capitalized on their possessions more effectively. While Temple committed 16 turnovers to Western Carolina’s 12, the Owls scored 15 points off those Catamount miscues, nearly doubling the 7 points Western Carolina managed from Temple’s errors.

Guard Kaylah Turner led all scorers, spearheading the Temple attack with a game-high 23 points. The 5-foot-6 sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, added 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 31 minutes of action. She was instrumental in stretching the defense, hitting several key three-pointers.

Temple’s frontcourt also delivered a strong performance. Jaleesa Molina, a 6-foot-2 forward from Hague, Netherlands, nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds in 24 minutes. Saniyah Craig, a 6-foot-1 forward from Phoenix, Arizona, contributed 7 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists, facilitating the offense from the post.

For Western Carolina, Taj Hunter was the primary offensive threat. The 5-foot-8 guard from Atlanta, Georgia, finished with 18 points. Ally Hollifield, a 5-foot-7 guard from Shelby, North Carolina, orchestrated the offense with a team-high 7 assists while adding 11 points.

The game’s tempo was established early. Temple opened the scoring with a Savannah Curry layup just 23 seconds in and never relinquished the lead. A 9-0 run in the first quarter, capped by a Curry free throw, gave the Owls an 11-2 advantage and forced Western Carolina to play from behind for the remainder of the contest.

While the Catamounts managed to keep the margin respectable for stretches, Temple consistently answered with scoring bursts. A three-pointer from Turner late in the third quarter pushed the lead to 62-51, and the Owls continued to pull away in the final period, leading by as many as 22 points before settling on the 20-point victory.

The win provides a positive conclusion to Temple’s early-season tournament play after a difficult 50-85 loss to Michigan State just two days prior. Western Carolina, meanwhile, continues to search for consistency after its second consecutive double-digit loss.

Temple returns to action on Dec. 13 against VCU, while Western Carolina will look to rebound at home against South Carolina Upstate on Dec. 3.
