Campbell vs. Grambling
CHICAGO (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter defensive performance propelled the Campbell women’s basketball team to a 67-51 victory over Grambling on Saturday in a non-conference matchup at the DePaul Multi-Team Event.
The Fightin’ Camels improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Lady Tigers fell to 1-6.
The game was tightly contested through the opening period, with Grambling holding a narrow 19-17 lead after the first quarter. However, the contest turned decisively in the second frame as Campbell’s defense completely stifled the Lady Tigers’ offense. Grambling was held to just two points in the quarter, a scoring drought that allowed Campbell to seize control. The Fightin’ Camels outscored Grambling 20-2 in the period to take a 37-21 lead into halftime.
Campbell maintained its advantage throughout the second half, never allowing Grambling to mount a significant comeback. The Lady Tigers managed to match the Fightin’ Camels in the third and fourth quarters, but the damage from the second period proved insurmountable.
Jasmine Nivar led the way for Campbell, recording a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of action. Gianni Boone was the game’s leading scorer, contributing 16 points for the Fightin’ Camels. Ciara Alexander added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Olivia Tucker and Hadleigh Dill each chipped in 10 points.
For Grambling, Shaniah Nunn scored 11 points. Monica Marsh facilitated the offense with seven assists.
The outcome was heavily influenced by starkly different shooting efficiencies. Campbell connected on 25 of 51 field goal attempts, while Grambling struggled from the floor, making just 17 of 60 shots. The Fightin’ Camels also capitalized on their opportunities inside, outscoring the Lady Tigers 38-20 in the paint.
Campbell’s next game is Friday against North Dakota State in Jacksonville, Florida. Grambling travels to face Baylor on Sunday.
