NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A matchup of teams at opposite ends of the Ohio Valley Conference standings unfolds Saturday when the surging Western Illinois Leathernecks visit the struggling Tennessee State Tigers.

The game tips off at 2 p.m. EST at the Howard Gentry Complex.

Western Illinois (19-3, 9-1 OVC) enters on a dominant run, having won nine of its last 10 games. The Leathernecks are coming off a 68-53 road victory at Tennessee Tech on Thursday, powered by 25 points from standout guard Mia Nicastro.

Nicastro has been the engine for Western Illinois, averaging 24.6 points over her last seven contests. She scored 25 points in the first meeting against Tennessee State this season, a 76-59 Leathernecks win in Macomb on Jan. 8.

Tennessee State (3-19, 1-9) looks to halt a five-game skid. The Tigers fell 65-60 to Eastern Illinois at home on Thursday, despite 14 points from guard XaiOnna Whitfield. Whitfield, who leads the team in scoring during conference play, was held to nine points in the loss at Western Illinois last month.

The Tigers have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 68.2 points per game in OVC play. Containing Nicastro and a Western Illinois offense that averages 72.1 points per game will be their primary challenge.

Western Illinois has relied on a balanced attack behind Nicastro. Mallory Shetley added 19 points and four assists in the win over Tennessee Tech.

For Tennessee State, finding consistent scoring beyond Whitfield is crucial. Brianna Wooldridge and Erin Martin have provided moments of production, but the Tigers have been held under 60 points in six of their last eight games.

The Leathernecks currently sit atop the OVC standings, while Tennessee State is tied for last. A win would solidify Western Illinois’s position, while the Tigers seek a signature conference upset to build momentum for the final stretch of the season.
