South Florida Tops Memphis in American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — The South Florida Bulls used a balanced offensive attack and a decisive advantage in the paint to secure a 90-81 victory over the Memphis Tigers in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at FedExForum.

The Bulls, who improved to 10-7 overall, placed five scorers in double figures, led by Katie Davidson’s 20 points. Carla Brito added 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a block, while L’or Mputu contributed 15 points and eight rebounds. Edyn Battle scored 16 points and Stefanie Ingram orchestrated the offense with a game-high 13 assists to go with eight points.

Memphis, which fell to 7-10, was carried by a stellar individual performance from guard Daejah Richmond. The Cordova, Tennessee, native scored 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists in 34 minutes. Tamya Smith added 12 points and four blocks for the Tigers.

The game’s most critical sequence came late in the third quarter, as South Florida built a cushion that Memphis could not overcome. After a Chaé Harris free throw brought Memphis within 48-47 with nine seconds left in the period, the Bulls opened the fourth on a 10-2 run. The surge was capped by a Stefanie Ingram assist to L’or Mputu for a jump shot, pushing the lead to 58-50 with 9:01 remaining. Memphis never got closer than six points the rest of the way, as South Florida consistently answered every Tigers push with scores in the lane.

South Florida’s offensive efficiency proved to be the difference. The Bulls shot 50% from the field, converting 35 of 70 attempts, and dominated inside with 54 points in the paint. They also capitalized on their limited three-point opportunities, making 5 of 12 from beyond the arc. Memphis, by contrast, struggled from deep, hitting only 2 of 12 three-point attempts and finishing at 44.4% overall from the floor.

Despite committing 16 turnovers, which Memphis converted into 21 points, South Florida compensated with strong rebounding, particularly on the offensive glass where they collected 12 boards leading to second-chance opportunities. The Tigers won the turnover battle with 13 giveaways and out-blocked the Bulls 5-3, but could not match South Florida’s consistent scoring output.

The win marks South Florida’s third in its last four games, while Memphis has now lost two of its last three. The Bulls will look to continue their momentum when they host Texas-San Antonio on Tuesday. Memphis hits the road for its next contest, traveling to face North Texas, also on Tuesday.
