South Dakota State Remains Unbeaten, Topples Gonzaga

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter surge propelled the undefeated South Dakota State Jackrabbits to a 72-63 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a nonconference women’s basketball game Thursday night at a raucous Sanford Pentagon.

In a clash defined by contrasting styles, the Jackrabbits’ blistering perimeter shooting and opportunistic defense proved too much for a Gonzaga team that controlled the paint but was ultimately undone by a cascade of turnovers. The win extends South Dakota State’s perfect start to the season to five wins and zero losses, while Gonzaga falls to two wins and three losses.

The game was a tale of two halves, or more precisely, one decisive quarter. The opening period was a tightly contested affair, ending in a 17-17 deadlock. Gonzaga’s Allie Turner opened the scoring with a three-pointer, and the teams traded baskets throughout the frame, with neither able to establish a significant advantage.

The complexion of the contest changed entirely in the second quarter. South Dakota State erupted for 27 points, overwhelming the Bulldogs with a relentless offensive display. The Jackrabbits’ offense was fueled by precision from beyond the arc, where they hit four three-pointers in the quarter, and a stifling defense that forced Gonzaga into a series of costly mistakes. The Bulldogs managed only 14 points in the period, and a game that was once level turned into a 44-31 halftime deficit for the visitors.

South Dakota State’s offensive efficiency was a key differentiator. The Jackrabbits scored 72 points on just 72 possessions, an offensive rating of 99.3, and were lethal from three-point range, finishing 12 of 25. Gonzaga, by contrast, scored 63 points on 74 possessions, an offensive rating of 84.9, and struggled mightily from deep, connecting on only 4 of 19 attempts.

While Gonzaga won the battle inside, outscoring South Dakota State 30-16 in the paint and grabbing a commanding 14 offensive rebounds to the Jackrabbits’ 3, they could not overcome their self-inflicted wounds. The Bulldogs committed 22 turnovers, which South Dakota State converted into 22 points. The Jackrabbits, who committed 15 turnovers of their own, capitalized on nearly every Gonzaga miscue to build and maintain their lead.

Gonzaga showed fight after halftime, outscoring South Dakota State 19-17 in the third quarter to trim the deficit to 61-50 heading into the final frame. The Bulldogs continued to chip away in the fourth, but every time they threatened to close the gap, the Jackrabbits responded with a critical basket to keep them at arm’s length, ultimately securing the nine-point victory.

South Dakota State’s attack was balanced and efficient. Madison Mathiowetz led the way with 17 points, including three shots from long distance. Katie Vasecka added 16 points, and Hadley Thul provided a spark off the bench with 10 points. The Jackrabbits’ ball movement was crisp, with Emilee Fox directing the offense and dishing out a game-high six assists.

For Gonzaga, Allie Turner shouldered the scoring load with a game-high 19 points. Lauren Whittaker, from Christchurch, New Zealand, added 15 points and was a force on the glass, but also committed several of the team’s turnovers. The Bulldogs’ offense often stalled against South Dakota State’s disciplined defense, managing only seven total assists on the night.

The announced attendance of 2,136 at the Sanford Pentagon witnessed a statement win for the South Dakota State program, which entered the game with a 77.10 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, and lived up to that billing with a performance built on sharp shooting and defensive tenacity. Gonzaga, meanwhile, will look to regroup and correct its turnover issues as it continues a challenging early-season schedule.

Gonzaga returns to action Sunday at home against Eastern Washington. South Dakota State travels to Cancún, Mexico, for its next contest, facing North Carolina on Thursday.
