Nebraska Outlasts North Dakota State in Women’s Basketball Showdown

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Interstat) — In a neutral-site women’s basketball showdown at the Sanford Pentagon on Sunday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers used a dominant offensive performance to pull away from the North Dakota State Bison and remain undefeated this season.

Nebraska improved to 4-0 overall by defeating North Dakota State, which saw its record level at 2-2.

The game was ultimately decided by efficiency, as Nebraska’s sharp shooting proved too much for North Dakota State to overcome. The Cornhuskers connected on 60 percent of their shots from the floor, going 33 for 55. They were also effective from beyond the arc, making 6 of 15 three-point attempts, and from the free-throw line, converting 10 of 13.

North Dakota State, by contrast, shot 46.7 percent on 28-of-60 shooting from the floor but struggled mightily from long distance, making only 3 of 16 three-point attempts. The Bison went 11 for 16 from the foul line.

The disparity in offensive execution was further highlighted by the teams’ offensive ratings. Nebraska scored 82 points on 72 possessions for a rating of 113.6, while North Dakota State managed 70 points on 76 possessions for a rating of 92.6.

Avery Koenen was a standout in the losing effort for the Bison. The 6-foot-2 forward from Montevideo, Minnesota, poured in a game-high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 34 minutes of action. She was complemented by Karrington Asp, a 6-foot-2 player from Epworth, Iowa, who added 14 points and six rebounds. Jocelyn Schiller of Grand Forks, North Dakota, chipped in 10 points and three assists.

Nebraska’s victory was a balanced effort, led by Amiah Hargrove of Christopher, Illinois. The 6-foot-2 forward scored 17 points and collected seven rebounds in just 25 minutes. Britt Prince, a 5-foot-11 guard from Omaha, Nebraska, orchestrated the offense with 16 points and three assists. Jessica Petrie, from Gold Coast, Australia, provided a strong all-around game with 12 points, three rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Claire Johnson of Paducah, Kentucky, also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Cornhuskers capitalized on North Dakota State’s mistakes, scoring 22 points off of 19 Bison turnovers. Nebraska committed 17 turnovers of its own, leading to 19 points for North Dakota State.

The battle inside was closely contested, with Nebraska holding a slight 52-46 advantage in points in the paint. North Dakota State won the battle on the offensive glass, securing 11 offensive rebounds to Nebraska’s six. Both teams recorded six steals, while Nebraska registered four blocks to North Dakota State’s one.

The Cornhuskers continue their homestand Wednesday against Oral Roberts. North Dakota State returns to action Friday when it hosts Tulane.
