Hawks Force 29 Turnovers, Cruise Past Bears in MEAC Matchup

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless defensive pressure and a staggering disparity in ball security, the Maryland-Eastern Shore women’s basketball team secured a decisive 66-53 victory over Morgan State on Saturday at Hill Field House.

The Hawks, now 14-11 overall, used a swarming defense to force 29 Morgan State turnovers, converting those mistakes into 28 points. Conversely, the Bears, who fell to 3-21, managed only nine points off 15 Maryland-Eastern Shore turnovers. That 19-point swing proved to be the fundamental story of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest played before an announced crowd of 748.

Maryland-Eastern Shore never trailed, establishing control with a 17-point first quarter and maintaining a steady advantage throughout. While the Hawks’ shooting was not efficient—they finished 25 of 61 from the floor and just 2 of 11 from three-point range—their activity on the offensive glass and ability to generate extra possessions were decisive. They grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, leading to 15 second-chance points and a dominant 40-22 edge in points in the paint.

Morgan State, which shot a respectable 38.6% from the field, was consistently undone by its own mistakes. The Bears committed 10 more turnovers than field goals made (17). Despite a solid perimeter shooting performance, hitting 5 of 11 from deep, and matching the Hawks at the free-throw line (14 of 18), they could not overcome the constant disruption of their offensive flow.

The most critical phase of the game arrived late in the second quarter, as Morgan State threatened to close the gap. After a Jael Butler layup brought the Bears within 20-18 with 5:39 remaining in the half, the Hawks unleashed the defensive run that would effectively seal the outcome. Over the final five and a half minutes of the quarter, Maryland-Eastern Shore forced seven Morgan State turnovers. This stretch included consecutive steals by Ashanti Lynch and Kaliya Perry, which the Hawks converted into transition baskets.

The sequence culminated in a defining play with just over two minutes left. Brianna Barnes stole the ball from Mihjae Hayes and converted the layup while being fouled. She completed the three-point play at the line, capping a 7-0 run that pushed the Hawks’ lead to 27-18. Morgan State managed only one field goal in the final 5:47 of the half, and Maryland-Eastern Shore took a 33-26 lead into the break, having successfully repelled the Bears’ strongest push.

Barnes, a 5-foot-11 guard from the Bronx, New York, led the Hawks with 15 points and seven rebounds. Her backcourt mate, Dayshawna Carter of Harlem, New York, provided a crucial offensive spark with a game-high 16 points in just 22 minutes, including a key three-pointer in the third quarter that stifled another potential Morgan State rally. The Hawks’ frontcourt of Lainey Allen and Dakieran Turner controlled the interior, combining for 14 points and 16 rebounds.

For Morgan State, Jael Butler of Gilroy, California, led all scorers with 15 points. Kailyn Nash of Muskegon, Michigan, added 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while point guard Michaela Bogans of Augusta, Georgia, distributed five assists but was hampered by the team’s overall turnover troubles.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Maryland-Eastern Shore, which also defeated Morgan State 68-61 on Jan. 3. The Hawks have now won four of their last five conference games. Morgan State has lost seven straight.

Maryland-Eastern Shore will look to continue its momentum when it hosts Norfolk State on Thursday. Morgan State seeks to end its skid on the road at North Carolina Central, also on Thursday.
