Nicholls State at Northwestern State
Preview: Nicholls State Colonels at Northwestern State Demons
CYPRESS, La. (Interstat) — A pivotal Southland Conference women’s basketball matchup awaits Thursday night at Prather Coliseum as the Northwestern State Demons host the Nicholls State Colonels.
Both teams enter the 6:30 p.m. contest with identical 2-3 conference records, seeking momentum in a tightly packed league standings. Overall, Nicholls State is 10-8, while Northwestern State sits at 9-9.
The game is a swift rematch of a defensive struggle on Jan. 3, which Northwestern State won 50-46 in Thibodaux. In that game, the Demons’ Vernell Atamah scored 20 points in a full 40-minute performance, while Nicholls State’s Marie Kenembeni had 12 points.
Atamah remains a focal point for the Demons (9-9, 2-3). The guard is averaging 17.4 points per game in conference play, coming off a 23-point effort in a 70-63 loss at Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 22. She has scored in double figures in seven straight games.
For the Colonels (10-8, 2-3), Kenembeni has surged into form. After a quiet stretch in mid-January, the forward erupted for 21 points and nine rebounds in just 28 minutes in a 69-66 road win at Southeastern Louisiana on Jan. 24. She followed that with a 20-point performance in a win over New Orleans on Jan. 22.
Nicholls State has won two straight, including that key road victory at Southeastern. Northwestern State looks to halt a two-game skid after losses at Incarnate Word and Stephen F. Austin.
The Demons have relied on a stout defense, allowing just 50 points in the first meeting. Containing Kenembeni’s recent offensive efficiency will be critical. For the Colonels, improving on their 46-point offensive output from the first matchup is essential, likely requiring supplemental scoring behind Kenembeni and Sh’Diamond McKnight (14 points vs. Southeastern).
With both teams knotted in the conference race, Thursday’s result will provide a crucial tiebreaker and trajectory shift as the Southland schedule nears its midpoint.
