George Mason Holds Off VCU Rally for Atlantic 10 Road Win
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The George Mason Patriots built a commanding 30-point lead and then withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by VCU to secure a 68-58 victory in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball game Sunday at Siegel Center.
The Patriots, who led 52-28 entering the final period, saw their advantage whittled down to just 10 points in the closing seconds as the Rams mounted a desperate comeback attempt that ultimately fell short. The win improved George Mason to 8-6 overall, while VCU dropped to 4-11.
The game’s defining stretch was its stark contrast in halves. George Mason executed with precision through three quarters, stifling the VCU offense and building what appeared to be an insurmountable lead. The Patriots held the Rams to just 21 points in the opening half and a mere seven in the third quarter. However, the final frame belonged almost entirely to VCU, which erupted for 30 points, more than it scored in the first three quarters combined. The Rams’ full-court pressure forced several late turnovers and fueled a 30-16 quarter advantage, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
George Mason’s victory was anchored by efficient offense and dominance on the glass. The Patriots shot 42.4% from the field and a sharp 40.7% from 3-point range, connecting on 11 of 27 attempts. They also controlled the offensive boards, grabbing 12 rebounds to VCU’s five, which led to critical second-chance opportunities. VCU struggled offensively for most of the contest, shooting 37.3% overall and a frigid 24% from beyond the arc, making only 6 of 25.
Kennedy Harris led all scorers with 21 points for George Mason, including three 3-pointers. Jada Brown added 17 points, also hitting three shots from deep, while Mary Amoateng contributed 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Maliyah Johnson provided a strong all-around performance with eight points, eight rebounds and three assists.
VCU’s late surge was led by Mary-Anna Asare, who scored 16 of her team-high 16 points in the second half. Makennah White came alive in the fourth quarter, finishing with 14 points, all in the final 20 minutes. Daija Preston added eight points and five rebounds for the Rams.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably George Mason’s overwhelming defensive performance through the first three quarters, which established the massive lead that even VCU’s explosive final period could not erase. The Patriots’ ability to disrupt VCU’s rhythm, contest shots, and control the backboards for 30 minutes created the cushion necessary to survive the Rams’ frantic comeback bid.
Attendance at the Siegel Center was 504. George Mason next hosts La Salle on Wednesday. VCU travels to face Saint Louis on Wednesday.
