Oklahoma Sooners vs. UCLA Bruins
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The UCLA Bruins used a balanced scoring attack and a dominant defensive performance to pull away from the Oklahoma Sooners for a 73-59 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday night at Golden 1 Center.
Gianna Kneepkens led all scorers with 20 points for the undefeated Bruins, who improved to 3-0. Angela Dugalić added 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Gabriela Jaquez contributed 11 points. The Bruins’ defense was anchored by Lauren Betts, who blocked four shots and altered numerous others in the paint.
Oklahoma, which fell to 1-1, was led by Payton Verhulst’s 16 points. Zya Vann scored 13 points and Aaliyah Chavez added 11 for the Sooners, but the team struggled with its shooting throughout the contest.
UCLA established control early, closing the first quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 24-22 lead. The Bruins never trailed again, methodically extending their advantage by winning each subsequent quarter. Their lead grew to 41-36 by halftime and 59-51 after three quarters, as the Sooners could not put together a sustained offensive run to close the gap.
The story of the game was Oklahoma’s inefficiency on offense. The Sooners shot just 30.7 percent from the floor, making only 23 of their 75 field goal attempts. They were also cold from beyond the arc, connecting on just 4 of 16 three-point attempts. UCLA, while not shooting lights out, was more effective, hitting 29 of 73 from the field for a 39.7 percent clip and making 8 of 22 from three-point range.
UCLA also capitalized on its opportunities at the free-throw line, making 7 of 9, while Oklahoma went 9 for 15.
Defensively, the Bruins forced 16 Oklahoma turnovers and converted them into 11 points. Oklahoma was more opportunistic with its 10 steals, leading to 17 points off UCLA’s miscues, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the shooting disparity. UCLA won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Oklahoma 45-40, and showcased its interior presence with seven total blocks compared to Oklahoma’s five.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 1,463.
UCLA’s next game is Thursday against North Carolina in Las Vegas. Oklahoma returns to action Wednesday at home against Missouri-Kansas City.
