Chattanooga Uses Dominant Second Quarter to Defeat Mercer in Southern Conference Matchup
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter surge propelled the Chattanooga Lady Mocs to a decisive 72-59 victory over the Mercer Bears in a Southern Conference women’s basketball game Friday night at McKenzie Arena before a crowd of 1,410.
The game turned decisively in the second period. After a competitive first quarter that saw Mercer lead 15-12, Chattanooga unleashed a 25-10 run over the next 10 minutes. The Lady Mocs’ offense, which had sputtered early, found its rhythm with a combination of inside scoring and disruptive defense that stifled the Bears’ attack. The surge gave Chattanooga a 37-25 halftime advantage, a margin Mercer would spend the rest of the game unsuccessfully trying to erase.
Chattanooga’s victory was anchored by a stellar performance from guard Caia Elisaldez. The 5-foot-5 junior from Whittier, California, controlled the game with 19 points and eight assists, orchestrating the offense and repeatedly breaking down Mercer’s defense. She was complemented by forward Gianna Corbitt, a 6-1 sophomore from Oakland Park, Florida, who poured in a game-high 22 points, while Izzy McPherson of Pleasant View, Tennessee, added 16 points and two blocks.
Mercer, which fell to 12-9 overall, was led by Micah O’Dell’s 13 points and Talia Kemp’s 11. The Bears managed to keep pace in the paint, trailing Chattanooga only 34-24 in that category, and capitalized on turnovers, scoring 14 points off Lady Mocs miscues compared to just four the other way. However, they could not sustain offensive consistency outside of the opening period and could not counter Chattanooga’s pivotal second-quarter explosion.
The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets, with Mercer outscoring Chattanooga 17-16 but failing to make a significant dent in the deficit. The Bears closed the gap to single digits several times in the fourth quarter, but each rally was answered by the Lady Mocs. A key sequence came with just over six minutes remaining when Kemp converted a layup and a free throw to pull Mercer within 59-53. Elisaldez immediately responded with a driving layup on the ensuing possession, and after a Mercer free throw, she scored again in the paint to push the lead back to nine and effectively seal the outcome.
Chattanooga, which improved to 14-5, showcased the balanced attack that has fueled its season. Beyond the top scorers, Ava Card contributed 10 points and critical defensive work. The Lady Mocs’ ball movement, facilitated by Elisaldez, led to numerous high-percentage shots and a clear command of the game’s tempo after the first quarter.
For Mercer, the loss extended a recent skid within conference play, while Chattanooga continued its strong form in Southern Conference action. The most important stretch of the game was unquestionably the second quarter, where Chattanooga’s 15-point swing established a working margin that provided a cushion against every subsequent Mercer push. The Bears’ inability to generate stops or consistent scoring during that pivotal stretch proved insurmountable.
The Lady Mocs’ defense was particularly effective in containing Mercer’s perimeter game, forcing contested shots and limiting clean looks. Mercer’s effort was typified by players like Rania Curry, who had seven points and active hands on defense, but the team’s collective shooting struggles against Chattanooga’s defensive pressure were a constant theme after the first period.
Chattanooga entered the game as a heavy favorite according to advanced metrics, and its performance from the second quarter onward justified that projection. The victory solidifies the Lady Mocs’ position near the top of the conference standings as they head into the heart of their league schedule.
Mercer will look to rebound quickly, traveling to face East Tennessee State on Sunday. Chattanooga continues its homestand, preparing to host Samford also on Sunday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Macon, Georgia, on Feb. 28.
