Fordham at VCU
Preview: Fordham Rams at VCU Rams
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — A pair of Atlantic 10 teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Fordham Rams visit the VCU Rams at the Siegel Center.
Both teams enter on losing streaks, with Fordham (9-11, 2-5 A-10) dropping its last two games and VCU (7-14, 3-4) coming off a 15-point road loss at Davidson. The matchup features two of the conference’s lower-scoring offenses, setting the stage for a defensive struggle.
Fordham, which fell 58-47 at George Washington on Saturday, will lean on guard Lakresha Edwards. She is coming off an 18-point performance and has averaged 13.8 points over her last five games, serving as her team’s most consistent scoring threat. Support from Carryn Easley (11 points vs. GW) will be crucial for a Fordham squad that has lost seven of its last nine.
VCU, which defeated George Washington 63-60 last week before the Davidson loss, has relied on a balanced attack. Guard Daija Preston, who scored 10 points against the Wildcats, leads the team in assists. The home Rams have found success recently at Siegel Center, winning two of their last three conference games there, including a 61-54 victory over Duquesne on Jan. 11.
Defense has been a relative strength for VCU, which held its last three home opponents to 60 points or fewer. Containing Edwards will be a primary focus. For Fordham, breaking a stretch of poor shooting—the team failed to reach 50 points in two of its last three outings—is imperative.
The all-time series is tightly contested, adding another layer to this conference clash. With both teams positioned in the bottom half of the A-10 standings, a win is vital for building any midseason traction.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. VCU will host Richmond next on Feb. 1, while Fordham returns home to face Rhode Island on Jan. 31.
