Grambling Women Outlast Arkansas-Pine Bluff in SWAC Contest
GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — The Grambling Lady Tigers used a dominant first quarter and capitalized on a staggering 32 turnovers by Arkansas-Pine Bluff to secure a 65-54 victory in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Fredrick Hobdy Assembly Center.
The most important part of the game was its chaotic opening frame, which set an insurmountable tone. Grambling raced out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter, an advantage built almost entirely on Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s self-inflicted wounds. The visiting Lady Golden Lions committed 11 turnovers in the period, allowing Grambling to attempt 10 more field goals. While the Lady Tigers shot just 35% in the quarter, the sheer volume of opportunities generated by Pine Bluff’s mistakes created a gap the visitors spent the rest of the night trying, and failing, to close.
Grambling’s defensive pressure, led by guard Douthsine Prien’s six assists and multiple early steals, consistently disrupted Pine Bluff’s offensive flow. The Lady Golden Lions finished with 32 turnovers, which Grambling converted into 24 points. Conversely, Grambling committed 19 turnovers of its own, but Pine Bluff managed only 15 points off those miscues.
Zaria Johnson led all scorers for Grambling with 17 points, while Shaniah Nunn added 14 points and two blocks. Arianna Mosley chipped in 12 points. The Lady Tigers improved to 6-13 overall.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff was led by Indiya Bowen’s 12 points and three assists. Jailah Pelly added 10 points. The Lady Golden Lions shot a respectable 45.5% from the field but their 32 turnovers limited them to just 44 shot attempts, 26 fewer than Grambling’s 70 attempts. Pine Bluff also went 0 for 5 from three-point range and 14 for 24 from the free-throw line. They fell to 6-11.
Grambling maintained a double-digit lead for nearly the entire contest after the first quarter. Pine Bluff made several pushes, closing to within nine points late in the third quarter, but could not sustain any momentum. Every potential run was stymied by another turnover or a key Grambling basket. A critical sequence early in the fourth quarter saw Pine Bluff cut the deficit to 54-50, but Grambling responded with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Jakiylah Esco layup, to push the lead back to 11 with 8:29 remaining and effectively seal the game.
Statistically, the game was a study in contrasting efficiencies. Both teams had 77 possessions, but Grambling’s offensive rating of 84.7 dwarfed Pine Bluff’s 69.8. Grambling also dominated the glass with 18 offensive rebounds leading to 19 second-chance points. Pine Bluff’s 10 offensive rebounds yielded only 11 second-chance points.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 551. Grambling’s victory aligned with pregame analytics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected the Lady Tigers with an 84.40 percent probability to win.
Grambling next hosts Mississippi Valley State on Saturday. Arkansas-Pine Bluff continues its road trip at Southern on Saturday.
