Delaware State Women Cruise Past South Carolina State in MEAC Matchup

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — In a season defined by narrow defeats and offensive struggles, the Delaware State women’s basketball team delivered a performance of rare and decisive control Thursday night. The Hornets used a suffocating first-quarter defensive effort to build an insurmountable lead and cruised to a 67-47 victory over South Carolina State at a sparsely attended SHM Memorial Center.

The game’s trajectory was set in a lopsided opening period. Delaware State, entering with a 3-16 record, held the Bulldogs to a single field goal over the first ten minutes. South Carolina State managed just five points in the quarter, shooting 1-for-8 from the floor and committing six turnovers against an active Hornets defense. Meanwhile, Delaware State found an early rhythm, connecting on 8 of 15 shots, including two three-pointers from Nevaeh Reaves, to establish a 20-5 advantage.

That 15-point cushion proved more than enough on a night where South Carolina State’s offense never found consistency. The Bulldogs showed a brief pulse in the second quarter, outscoring the Hornets 18-8 behind seven points from Monajah Ford, to trim the deficit to 28-23 at halftime. But any momentum was swiftly extinguished after the break.

Delaware State opened the third quarter with a 9-1 run, reclaiming a double-digit lead it would not relinquish. The Hornets matched their first-quarter output with another 20 points in the third, stretching the lead back to 48-32 and effectively sealing the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest.

The statistical story was one of stark efficiency contrasts. Delaware State shot 43.4% from the field and a sharp 47.1% from three-point range. South Carolina State countered with a 34.9% clip from the floor and mustered only two three-pointers on six attempts. While both teams were plagued by turnovers — Delaware State with 21, South Carolina State with 22 — the Hornets capitalized more effectively on their opportunities, translating their possessions into 90.4 points per 100 trips, compared to the Bulldogs’ anemic 66.7 offensive rating.

Nykesha Sanders, a guard from Detroit, led a balanced Delaware State attack with 17 points, hitting three shots from beyond the arc. Ericka Huggins added 10 points, while Amya Scott contributed 11 points and five assists. The Hornets’ inside presence was bolstered by Liliana Harrison, who chipped in nine points and a key early block.

South Carolina State, which fell to 5-15, was carried by guard Shaunice Reed. The Seattle native played 36 minutes and scored a game-high 20 points, accounting for nearly half of her team’s total offense. No other Bulldog reached double figures, with Dream Watson and Ford each adding seven points.

The most critical phase of the game was undoubtedly the opening quarter. Delaware State’s immediate defensive intensity and offensive execution created a hole too deep for a struggling South Carolina State team to escape. The Bulldogs, who were projected as strong favorites by advanced metrics pregame, never led and only drew within five points once after the initial Hornets surge.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Delaware State and provided a rare bright spot in a challenging season. South Carolina State, coming off a 44-point loss to Norfolk State, has now dropped two straight conference games.

Delaware State looks to build on the win quickly, traveling to face North Carolina Central on Saturday. South Carolina State will remain at home to host Maryland-Eastern Shore the same day.
