Boise State Rallies Past Fresno State in Mountain West Women’s Basketball

BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Boise State women’s basketball team used a dominant third-quarter surge to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Fresno State 60-52 in a Mountain West Conference matchup Wednesday night at Taco Bell Arena.

A crowd of 1,646 watched as the Broncos, now 15-5 overall, shook off a sluggish first half to outscore the Bulldogs 22-13 in the pivotal third period, turning a two-point halftime edge into a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. The Bulldogs fell to 9-10.

The contest was a defensive battle from the outset, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm. The teams were nearly identical in several key categories, but Boise State’s efficiency at the free-throw line proved decisive. The Broncos converted 15 of 18 attempts from the charity stripe, while Fresno State managed just 6 of 8. That nine-point advantage at the line was the ultimate difference on a night where both teams shot an identical 20 field goals.

Fresno State’s defense was active early, forcing 15 Boise State turnovers and converting them into 13 points. The Bulldogs also held a 13-9 edge in steals, with Indiya Clarke of Wasilla, Alaska, leading the way with four thefts. Despite trailing 12-10 after a low-scoring first quarter, Fresno State put together its best stretch in the second, outscoring Boise State 16-12 to take a 26-24 lead into the intermission.

The complexion of the game changed entirely after halftime. Boise State’ offense, led by the dynamic Australian duo of Libby Hutton and Dani Bayes, finally found its footing. The Broncos opened the third quarter on a 15-3 run, seizing control with a combination of forced turnovers and timely shooting. Hutton, a 6-foot guard from Perth, was the catalyst, scoring 11 of her game-high 25 points in the quarter. She finished playing 32 minutes, adding three assists and a block.

Bayes, a 5-11 guard from Brisbane, provided critical perimeter scoring, hitting four three-pointers on her way to 14 points. Her back-to-back triples early in the third quarter stretched the Bronco lead and forced Fresno State into a timeout, from which they never fully recovered.

Fresno State’s offensive challenges were underscored by its shooting numbers. The Bulldogs shot just 32.3 percent from the field (20 of 62) and 24 percent from three-point range (6 of 25). Their offensive rating of 74.5 points per 100 possessions highlighted a night of difficult shots and missed opportunities.

Avery Watkins led the Bulldogs with 12 points, while Emilia Long of Port Angeles, Washington, facilitated the offense with six assists to go with eight points. Morelia Chavez of Morelia, Mexico, provided a spark off the bench with nine points, all from beyond the arc, but the Bulldogs could not sustain enough scoring runs to close the gap in the second half.

Boise State’s Tatum Thompson of Woodinville, Washington, played a team-high 36 minutes, contributing six points, two assists and relentless defense. Fresno State’s Jaisa Gamble of San Bruno, California, logged a full 40 minutes, finishing with six points and five assists.

The Bulldogs managed to pull within six points on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, the last at 56-50 following a Chavez three-pointer with 6:21 remaining. Each time, however, Boise State answered, often with Hutton attacking the basket or drawing fouls. The Broncos scored their final four points at the free-throw line to seal the victory.

With the win, Boise State continues its strong conference campaign, while Fresno State looks to regroup. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Fresno on Feb. 11.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the opening minutes of the third quarter. With Fresno State holding a narrow two-point halftime lead and momentum, Boise State emerged from the locker room with transformed energy. They immediately applied defensive pressure, leading to Fresno State turnovers and rushed shots. On offense, the Broncos executed with precision, spearheaded by Libby Hutton’s aggressive drives and Dani Bayes’s lethal three-point shooting. This 15-3 run to start the half flipped the scoreboard and the game’s psychological edge, establishing a cushion that Fresno State, with its offensive struggles, could never overcome. That five-minute stretch decided the contest, turning a defensive stalemate into a comfortable Boise State lead.
