Preview: Washington Huskies at Indiana Hoosiers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Interstat) — Two Big Ten women’s basketball teams looking to halt skids will meet Wednesday when the Washington Huskies visit the Indiana Hoosiers at Assembly Hall.
Washington (12-4, 1-2 Big Ten) arrives after back-to-back losses, including a 78-72 overtime defeat at Purdue on Sunday. The Huskies’ offense runs through sophomore guard Sayvia Sellers, who is averaging 17.1 points per game in conference play. She scored 23 points in 38 minutes against Purdue.
Indiana (11-7, 0-5) is in search of its first conference win amid a five-game losing streak. The Hoosiers fell 56-53 to Iowa on Sunday, their third single-digit loss in that stretch. Senior guard Shay Ciezki has been a bright spot, averaging 20.2 points over her last five games. She poured in 31 points in a narrow loss at Nebraska on Jan. 8.
The matchup features a contrast in momentum. Washington’s strong non-conference start has hit a snag in league play, while Indiana has faced a brutal opening Big Ten schedule. The Huskies will rely on Sellers and supporting scorers Elle Ladine and Hannah Stines to jumpstart their perimeter attack. Indiana needs Ciezki’s scoring and improved defense after allowing 78.2 points per game during its losing streak.
This is the first meeting between the programs as Big Ten opponents. Washington leads the all-time series 3-1, but the teams have not played since 2010.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Washington visits Minnesota on Sunday. Indiana travels to Ohio State next Thursday.
