UAB at East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — A pair of teams riding winning streaks will meet Tuesday when the East Carolina Pirates host the UAB Blazers in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball matchup at Williams Arena.

East Carolina (8-5) has won four consecutive games, most recently an 81-59 victory over Campbell on Dec. 21. The Pirates have relied on balanced scoring and defense during the streak, holding three of those opponents under 62 points. Anzhane’ Hutton has been a consistent contributor, averaging 9.2 points and 4.6 rebounds over the last five games, including a 14-point, 6-rebound performance against Campbell.

UAB (7-5) enters on a three-game win streak, capped by a 65-49 win over Samford on Dec. 22. The Blazers’ offense has found its rhythm, averaging 73.7 points during the streak. Guard Sofia Munoz has been instrumental, averaging 14.8 points and 3.8 assists over her last five outings. She scored 24 points in a narrow loss at Southern Miss on Dec. 7 and posted 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the win over Samford.

The game marks the conference opener for both programs. East Carolina will look to protect its home court, where it is 6-2 this season. UAB, 2-3 in road games, will test its recent momentum away from home.

The Pirates’ interior presence, led by Hutton and Zaniah Zellous who had a double-double against Campbell, will challenge a UAB frontcourt that features Monae Duffy, who had 13 points and 8 rebounds against Samford.

Tuesday’s contest is the first of a regular-season series, with the rematch scheduled for Jan. 24 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Following this game, East Carolina will host Memphis on Saturday, Jan. 3. UAB will travel to face Charlotte on the same day.
