Brown Holds Off Dartmouth in Ivy League Women’s Basketball Contest
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — In a gritty Ivy League contest defined by defensive pressure and scoring droughts, the Brown women’s basketball team held off a persistent Dartmouth squad for a 58-51 victory on Friday night at Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears, improving to 14-7 overall, were propelled by a game-high 19 points from guard Grace Arnolie. The Vienna, Virginia, native added three assists and a block in 31 minutes, providing the consistent offensive punch Brown needed on a night where shooting percentages were low for both sides. Dartmouth, which fell to 10-12, was led by 13 points from guard Zeynep Ozel of Istanbul, Turkey.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the second quarter, where Brown’s defense effectively seized control. After a high-scoring and tightly contested first period that ended with Dartmouth leading 20-17, the Big Green’s offense went cold. Brown capitalized, holding Dartmouth to just eight points in the quarter on a series of missed layups and contested jumpers. The Bears, meanwhile, methodically built their advantage. A three-pointer from Charlotte Adams-Lopez of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, at the 9:02 mark gave Brown its first lead at 20-17. Just over a minute later, forward Charlotte Climenhage of Folsom, California, connected from beyond the arc to extend the lead to six.
Dartmouth’s struggles were compounded by turnovers, which Brown converted into 14 points. While the Big Green managed to stay within striking distance thanks to their own defense, which generated 19 points off Bears miscues, they could not string together enough successful possessions to reclaim momentum. A step-back jumper from Arnolie with 2:39 remaining in the half gave Brown a 30-23 lead, and the Bears took a 33-28 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter saw both teams locked in a defensive struggle, combining for only 22 points. Brown maintained its cushion, leading 45-38 heading into the final frame. Dartmouth made several pushes in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to 49-45 on a three-pointer from Sierra Carson of Norway, Maine, with 8:04 to play. Each time, however, Brown had an answer. Arnolie answered Carson’s three with a driving layup, and after a Dartmouth turnover, Ada Anamekwe converted an offensive rebound to push the lead back to eight at 51-45 with 6:25 left.
The Bears then delivered the decisive run. Following a media timeout, Adams-Lopez sank a crucial three-pointer off an assist from Alyssa Moreland, stretching the lead to 54-45 with 5:49 remaining. Dartmouth would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as Brown secured the victory at the free-throw line.
Moreland, a junior from Beverly, Massachusetts, was a force defensively for Brown, recording three blocks and eight points. Climenhage provided a key spark off the bench with nine points, all from three-point range. For Dartmouth, guard Nina Minicozzi of Belmont, Massachusetts, contributed 11 points, but the Big Green were ultimately hampered by their inability to score inside, being outscored 20-10 in the paint.
The win gives Brown a regular-season sweep of Dartmouth, having also defeated the Big Green 55-41 in Hanover on Jan. 30. Both teams return to action quickly in Ivy League play on Saturday, with Dartmouth traveling to New Haven to face Yale and Brown hosting Harvard.
