William & Mary at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — The William & Mary Tribe will look to even the season series and solidify their standing when they visit the Hampton Pirates in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball matchup Saturday at the Convocation Center.

William & Mary (15-13) enters with momentum from a 70-59 home victory over Elon on Thursday, led by 19 points from Jana Sallman and 16 points from standout guard Monet Dance. The Tribe have won two straight, including a 60-41 road win at UNC Wilmington on March 1.

Hampton (10-19) seeks to halt a skid after falling 69-51 at Campbell on Thursday. The Pirates’ recent form has been inconsistent, with a 77-71 win at Northeastern on March 1 standing as their only victory in their last seven games.

The matchup features two key guards. William & Mary’s Dance has been a consistent catalyst, averaging 10.2 points and 4.0 assists over her last eight contests, including an 18-point, 6-assist effort in a win over Towson on Feb. 15. Hampton will counter with Olivia Smith, who is coming off an 11-point, 5-assist performance at Campbell and scored 12 points in the win over Northeastern.

Hampton won the first meeting this season, 59-49, at William & Mary on Jan. 16. The Pirates will aim to replicate that defensive success on their home floor. William & Mary, however, has shown greater offensive potency lately, averaging 65 points in its two-game win streak.

For Hampton, support for Smith will be crucial. Kayla Lezama (10 points vs. Campbell) and Taylor Gibson (9 points) provided sparks last time out. William & Mary will rely on Dance’s playmaking and Sallman’s scoring punch to overcome a challenging road environment.

Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon as both teams conclude their regular season schedules. William & Mary seeks a winning season, while Hampton looks to close with an upset and build positive momentum.
