Southern Illinois Women Dominate Illinois State Behind Kraus’ 30 Points

CARBONDALE, Ill. (Interstat) — On a night when the numbers overwhelmingly favored the visiting Illinois State Redbirds, the Southern Illinois Salukis authored a stunning reversal of fortune, riding a career-high 30 points from Alayna Kraus to a decisive 84-60 victory in a Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball clash Friday at SIU Arena.

The result defied both recent form and statistical projection. Illinois State entered with a 13-9 record, winners of three straight and four of their last five. Southern Illinois, at 8-13, had struggled for consistency. According to Interstat’s ELO system, the Redbirds held a commanding 88.90 percent probability to win. That projection evaporated in a dominant second-quarter surge by the Salukis that set the tone for the remainder of the game.

The first quarter offered little indication of the coming deluge. While Southern Illinois held a narrow 17-14 lead, the game remained tightly contested. The pivotal shift began in the second period, where the Salukis unleashed a devastating 25-point quarter against Illinois State’s 11. Southern Illinois’ offense, which had been efficient early, became nearly unstoppable, while their defensive pressure intensified. The Salukis forced seven Illinois State turnovers in the quarter, converting them into 10 points. By halftime, a three-point lead had ballooned to a 42-25 advantage, and the Redbirds never recovered.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably that second-quarter explosion, which was fueled by a combination of Southern Illinois’ offensive precision and disruptive defense. The Salukis shot a scorching 9-of-13 from the field in the period, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Simultaneously, they held Illinois State to just 4-of-15 shooting. This two-way dominance in a critical juncture broke the game open, transforming a competitive matchup into a lopsided affair and silencing the statistical expectations.

Kraus, a 5-foot-8 guard from Okawville, Illinois, was the catalyst and the constant. She finished 11-of-22 from the field, hitting four three-pointers, and added three assists in 37 minutes. Her performance built upon her strong recent outings, where she scored 18 points in each of her last two games. She received ample support, notably from Kayla Cooper, who added 17 points, three assists and two blocks, and Jeniah Thompson, who contributed 13 points and two assists off the bench.

Illinois State, which had been riding a wave of defensive successes in its recent wins, was undone by its inability to generate offense or take care of the ball. The Redbirds shot just 37.3% from the field and committed 13 turnovers, which Southern Illinois converted into 16 points. Doneelah Washington led the Redbirds with 19 points and four blocks, and Bella Finnegan added 14 points, but the team managed only four total assists against 13 turnovers, highlighting a stagnant offensive night.

Southern Illinois’ offensive efficiency was staggering. The Salukis posted an offensive rating of 109.5, scoring 84 points on 77 possessions, while Illinois State managed a rating of just 80.9. Southern Illinois shot 47.7% from the field and a blistering 60% from three-point range, making 12 of 20 attempts. They also shared the ball effectively, tallying 10 assists to Illinois State’s four, and matched the Redbirds’ 24 points in the paint despite a perceived size disadvantage.

Defensively, the Salukis were equally impressive, recording 10 steals and limiting Illinois State’s second chances by holding them to just four offensive rebounds. The Redbirds’ 7-0 advantage in blocks, led by Washington’s four, was a lone bright spot but could not compensate for the broader struggles.

With the win, Southern Illinois evened the season series ahead of a rematch in Normal on Feb. 26 and improved to 9-13 overall. Illinois State fell to 13-10. Both teams return to action Sunday, with the Salukis hosting Bradley and the Redbirds traveling to face Evansville.
