Idaho State Women Pull Away From Montana State in Big Sky Matchup

POCATELLO, Idaho (Interstat) — The Idaho State Bengals, propelled by a dominant performance from guard Kacey Spink and a stifling defensive effort, handed the visiting Montana State Bobcats a decisive 79-60 defeat in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Holt Arena.

A crowd of 1,011 watched as the Bengals (12-6, 3-2 Big Sky) controlled the contest from the opening tip, methodically building a lead that the Bobcats (13-5, 4-1) never seriously threatened. The victory snapped Montana State’s four-game winning streak and handed the Bobcats their first conference loss of the season.

The most important part of the game was Idaho State’s immediate and sustained defensive pressure, which disrupted Montana State’s offensive rhythm from the outset and created a cascade of turnovers and rushed shots. The Bengals forced 22 Montana State turnovers, converting them into 28 points, while committing only 10 turnovers themselves. This relentless defensive effort, spearheaded by Spink’s five steals and Tasia Jordan’s two blocks, allowed Idaho State to establish a double-digit lead by halftime and never look back.

Spink, a 5-foot-9 guard from Spokane, Washington, was the catalyst, orchestrating the offense and delivering a game-high 17 points to go with five assists and five steals in 31 minutes. Her backcourt partner, Aspen Caldwell of Idaho Falls, added 15 points. The Bengals’ attack was balanced, with Tylie Jones contributing 11 points and Camryn Collman adding seven off the bench.

Montana State, which entered the game with a 78.4% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, struggled to find consistent offense. Addison Harris led the Bobcats with 18 points, and Jamison Philip scored 14, but the team shot poorly from the field and was held to its second-lowest point total of the season.

Idaho State set the tone early, closing the first quarter on a 12-3 run to take a 20-17 lead. They extended their advantage to 39-30 by halftime, capitalizing on a series of Montana State miscues. The Bobcats showed brief signs of life with a quick 5-0 spurt to open the third quarter, cutting the deficit to four, but the Bengals responded with a 10-2 run to push the lead back to 12 and effectively seal the game. Idaho State maintained at least a 14-point cushion throughout the entire fourth quarter.

The Bengals’ defensive focus was particularly evident on Montana State’s primary ball-handlers. Bobcat point guard Taylee Chirrick, who came in averaging over five assists per game in conference play, was hounded into six turnovers against just five assists.

The win marks a significant bounce-back for Idaho State, which had dropped two of its last three, including a conference road loss at Idaho. For Montana State, the loss halts the momentum of a strong start to league play that included an overtime win over Eastern Washington and a rout of rival Montana.

Idaho State outscored Montana State in every quarter, showcasing the consistency of their game plan. The Bengals also dominated points in the paint, 42-28, and second-chance points, 17-9.

Up next, Idaho State remains at home to host Montana on Saturday. Montana State will look to regroup quickly as it travels to face Weber State, also on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Bozeman on February 21.
