Gonzaga at Oregon State

Preview: Gonzaga Bulldogs at Oregon State Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Interstat) — A pivotal midseason nonconference clash between two surging, ranked women’s basketball teams is set for Thursday night when the Gonzaga Bulldogs visit the Oregon State Beavers at Gill Coliseum.

Both teams enter with identical 14-6 records, adding stakes to a matchup that could carry significant weight for NCAA Tournament seeding in March. Gonzaga has won seven of its last eight, including an 87-42 rout of San Diego last Saturday. Oregon State has won five of its last six, escaping with a 69-68 road win at Pepperdine on Jan. 17.

The game features a compelling duel at guard between two of the West Coast’s top scorers. Gonzaga’s Allie Turner is averaging 16.1 points and 5.1 assists over her last seven games, coming off a 25-point performance against San Francisco on Jan. 15. She orchestrates a Bulldogs offense that has scored 82 or more points in three of its last four contests.

Oregon State will counter with the hot hand of Jenna Villa, who is averaging 21.4 points over her last seven outings. Villa dropped a season-high 32 points against Pacific on Jan. 2 and saved her best for last in the Beavers’ most recent game, scoring 25 points, including the game-winning basket in the final seconds at Pepperdine.

Gonzaga’s recent success has been built on both ends of the floor. In their current three-game win streak, the Bulldogs have won by an average margin of 24.3 points while holding opponents to just 55.3 points per game. Jaiden Haile and Teryn Gardner provided efficient secondary scoring behind Turner in the blowout of San Diego.

Oregon State has shown resilience in close games but seeks more consistency after a 51-55 loss at Loyola Marymount on Jan. 15. Alongside Villa, guard Kennedie Shuler, who had 12 points and six assists against Pepperdine, is a key facilitator.

This contest is the first of a home-and-home series between the teams, who will meet again in Spokane on Feb. 5. For now, both look to claim a valuable ranked victory to bolster their postseason resumes.

Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST Thursday.
