Jackson State at Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the Southwestern Athletic Conference will meet Thursday when the Jackson State Lady Tigers visit the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers.

Both squads enter the Jan. 22 matchup at the Alfred Lawson, Jr. Multipurpose Center with identical 4-1 records in SWAC play, despite struggling through non-conference schedules. Jackson State is 4-13 overall, while Florida A&M is 4-12.

The Lady Tigers are coming off their most complete performance of the season, a 62-43 home victory over Prairie View on Saturday. Guard Jaileyah Cotton fueled the win with 15 points and seven assists, while Angel Wilkinson added a team-high 18 points. Cotton, averaging 8.8 points and 4.0 assists in SWAC play, will be a focal point for Jackson State’s offense.

Florida A&M saw a three-game conference win streak snapped in a 63-53 loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday. The Lady Rattlers will rely on guard Shaniyah McCarthy, who has been a consistent scorer. She is averaging 13.2 points per game in SWAC contests, including a 23-point outburst in a win over Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 15.

The game features a contrast in recent results. Jackson State’s decisive win over Prairie View showcased a stifling defense, holding an opponent under 45 points for the first time this season. Florida A&M, meanwhile, will look to rediscover its offensive rhythm after shooting just 32.8% from the field in the loss to Pine Bluff.

This contest begins a critical stretch for both teams in the crowded SWAC standings. The rematch is scheduled for Feb. 14 in Jackson, Miss.
