Baylor Overpowers UCF in Big 12 Women’s Basketball Matchup

WACO, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by suffocating defense and offensive struggles, the Baylor Lady Bears methodically dispatched the UCF Knights 73-48 in a Big 12 Conference women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.

The contest was never in doubt as Baylor, improving to 18-3 overall and solidifying its standing in the conference race, leveraged its defensive intensity from the opening tip to build a steady lead and never relented. UCF, which fell to 10-9, was plagued by turnovers and inefficient shooting throughout the night, unable to mount any sustained challenge.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the second quarter, where Baylor effectively put the outcome out of reach. Leading 16-13 after a competitive first period, the Lady Bears unleashed a decisive 18-10 run in the second frame. This stretch was fueled almost entirely by Baylor’s defense converting into offense. The Lady Bears recorded 16 steals for the game, with many occurring during this pivotal quarter, leading to 24 points off turnovers overall. UCF’s 22 total turnovers, contrasted with Baylor’s 11, provided a constant source of transition opportunities for the home team.

Baylor’s Taliah Scott, a guard from Orange Park, Florida, spearheaded the offensive effort with a game-high 22 points in just 29 minutes, showcasing a versatile scoring touch. She was complemented by forward Darianna Littlepage-Buggs of Oklahoma City, who posted a strong double-double with 13 points and a relentless presence on the glass, contributing to Baylor’s 13 offensive rebounds. The Lady Bears’ ball movement was sharp, as evidenced by 16 team assists, with point guard Jana Van Gytenbeek of Greenwood Village, Colorado, directing the flow with 7 assists to go with 9 points.

UCF, meanwhile, found scoring to be a laborious task all evening. The Knights shot a frigid 29.8% from the field, making only 14 of 47 attempts. While they stayed relatively close early, their offense stagnated against Baylor’s active, switching defense. The Knights were led by Khyala Ngodu of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who fought for 11 points and a team-high 30 minutes, and Kristol Ayson of Tacoma, Washington, who added 10 points. Their efforts at the free-throw line, where they made 18 of 25, were a lone bright spot but insufficient against Baylor’s multifaceted attack.

Baylor also dominated the defensive interior, blocking 8 shots compared to UCF’s 3. Kyla Abraham of Carrollton, Virginia, was a force in the paint with 6 points and 2 blocks in only 12 minutes of action, while Bella Fontleroy of Springfield, Missouri, filled the stat sheet with 9 points, 2 blocks, and disruptive defense.

The Lady Bears steadily expanded their lead after halftime, winning the third quarter 17-13 and then closing with their highest-scoring period, a 22-point fourth quarter, as their depth and defensive pressure wore down the Knights. Baylor’s offensive rating of 99.6 points per 100 possessions, while not spectacular, was more than enough against a UCF squad that managed a rating of just 68.7.

A crowd of 3,192 watched as Baylor controlled every facet of the game, from points in the paint (26-20) to assists (16-5) and the critical turnover margin. The victory keeps Baylor near the top of the competitive Big 12 as the season approaches its final month.

UCF will look to rebound quickly, returning home to face Texas Christian on Saturday. Baylor continues its homestand, preparing to host Houston on Sunday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Orlando on February 15.
