Kansas Holds Off Arizona in Women’s Basketball Road Win
TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Kansas Jayhawks, propelled by a dominant first quarter and a standout performance from Jaliya Davis, snapped a three-game losing streak with an 80-69 victory over the Arizona Wildcats in a nonconference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at McKale Center.
Despite entering the contest as a slight underdog according to predictive metrics, Kansas seized control from the opening tip. The Jayhawks erupted for 27 points in the first quarter, establishing a six-point lead they would never relinquish. Their early offensive surge, combined with a disruptive defensive effort, set the tone for the evening before an announced crowd of 5,503.
Arizona, which had won three of its last four, struggled to find consistent offense outside of a third-quarter push. The Wildcats closed the gap to four points late in the third period, but Kansas responded each time to quell the rally and pull away in the final frame.
The most critical sequence came late in the third quarter with Kansas leading by just four points. Arizona’s Achol Magot committed an offensive foul, negating a potential scoring opportunity. On the ensuing possession, Kansas’s Jaliya Davis was fouled and calmly sank two free throws. Moments later, after another Arizona turnover, S’Mya Nichols drew a foul and hit two more from the line. That four-point trip, fueled by Arizona’s mistakes, stretched the Jayhawk lead back to eight and halted the Wildcats’ momentum for good.
Davis, a sophomore from Overland Park, Kansas, was the engine for Kansas, finishing with a game-high 25 points to go with three assists and a block. She was instrumental in the Jayhawks’ 36-point effort in the paint. Elle Evans added 13 points, while S’Mya Nichols contributed 18 points off the bench. Laia Conesa provided a spark with seven points and four assists.
Arizona was led by Sumayah Sugapong’s 17 points and four assists. Point guard Lani Cornfield orchestrated the offense with a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists. Kamryn Kitchen provided a significant lift off the bench with 16 points, all in the second half, but the Wildcats could not overcome 22 turnovers, which Kansas converted into 19 points.
The Jayhawks improved to 12-8 overall, securing a crucial road win ahead of a return to Big 12 play. Arizona fell to 10-8, missing an opportunity to climb back to .500 in a game they were statistically favored to win. Kansas will host in-state rival Kansas State on Sunday. Arizona travels to face Iowa State on Saturday.
