Lafayette Edges Boston University in Patriot League Thriller

BOSTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by its frantic final seconds, the Lafayette Leopards escaped Agganis Arena with a 65-64 victory over the Boston University Terriers in a Patriot League women’s basketball contest Wednesday night.

The outcome was decided in the last 1.8 seconds, as Boston University’s Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir, fouled on a 3-point attempt, went to the line with a chance to tie or win the game. After missing the first free throw, the guard from Selfoss, Iceland, made the second to cut the deficit to one. Her intentional miss on the third attempt was corralled by Lafayette’s Maddison Krug, sealing the road win for the Leopards before an announced crowd of 647.

The dramatic finish capped a contest where neither team led by more than eight points. Lafayette (6-8, 2-1 Patriot League) weathered a strong first half from the Terriers, who took a 38-33 lead into halftime behind efficient shooting. Boston University (4-10, 0-3) connected on 9 of 18 from 3-point range for the game but was undone by 11 turnovers, which Lafayette converted into key opportunities.

The Leopards’ turnaround began in the third quarter, outscoring the Terriers 20-11 to seize a 53-49 lead entering the final period. The surge was fueled by guard Teresa Kiewiet, who scored a game-high 23 points, including 11 in the pivotal third quarter. Her backcourt mate, Haylie Adamski of Media, Pennsylvania, added 20 points, hitting 6 of 13 from beyond the arc.

Boston University’s interior presence, led by 6-foot-5 center Anete Adler of Keila, Estonia, kept the Terriers in striking distance. Adler finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while forward Anastasiia Semenova of St. Petersburg, Russia, provided 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. Gunnsteinsdóttir also scored 13 for the Terriers.

The fourth quarter featured five ties and three lead changes. With 30 seconds remaining and Lafayette clinging to a 63-61 lead, Adler found Semenova for a layup to tie the game. On the ensuing possession, Adamski was fouled and made the first of two free throws to put Lafayette back ahead 64-63 with 19 seconds left. She missed the second, setting up Boston University’s final regulation chance.

Adler again delivered in the clutch, driving for a layup to give the Terriers a 65-64 lead with just 5.7 seconds on the clock. Lafayette immediately inbounded to Kiewiet, who was fouled by SiSi Bentley of Hartford, Connecticut, on a drive with 1.8 seconds remaining. Kiewiet sank both free throws to restore Lafayette’s one-point edge, setting the stage for the final sequence and Gunnsteinsdóttir’s trip to the line.

Beyond the scoring, Lafayette’s victory was anchored by superior ball security, committing only two turnovers against Boston University’s 11. The Leopards also shot 41.7% from 3-point range, compared to 50% for the Terriers, but attempted 24 long-range shots to Boston University’s 18. Krug, a 6-3 forward from North Kingstown, Rhode Island, controlled the glass with nine rebounds and added three assists.

The win gives Lafayette its second straight conference victory following a win over Loyola Maryland, while Boston University’s losing streak extends to four games. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Easton, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 21.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Boston University entered the game with a 66.9% probability of winning. The Leopards defied those odds with a poised performance down the stretch, executing in the final seconds on both ends of the floor to secure the narrow road victory.
