North Alabama Holds Off West Georgia Rally in ASUN Women’s Basketball
CARROLLTON, Ga. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by a dominant opening quarter and a frantic final frame, the North Alabama Lions weathered a furious second-half rally to edge the West Georgia Wolves 65-60 in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at The Coliseum.
North Alabama, improving to 13-11 overall, seized control from the opening tip, holding West Georgia to a single field goal for nearly the entire first quarter. The Lions’ defense forced the Wolves into a series of rushed shots and turnovers, building a commanding 21-6 lead after ten minutes. West Georgia, which fell to 15-9, missed 13 of its first 14 shots from the floor.
The Wolves began to chip away in the second quarter, outscoring North Alabama 18-12 behind eight points from Grace O’Gara to trim the deficit to 33-24 at halftime. The Lions’ offense, which shot just 27 of 66 for the game, went cold, but their early cushion proved vital.
Katie Criswell of North Alabama, a 5-foot-10 guard from Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, was the offensive constant for the visitors. She scored a game-high 22 points, including three 3-pointers, to pace the Lions. Her back-to-back jump shots early in the first quarter helped establish the tone, and her third-quarter three-pointer helped stem a West Georgia push.
The Wolves’ comeback bid intensified in the fourth quarter. Trailing 50-37 entering the final period, West Georgia unleashed a 23-point quarter, spearheaded by O’Gara and Sydne Tolbert. O’Gara, a 5-5 guard from Worcester, Massachusetts, finished with 18 points, while Tolbert added 12, all in the second half. A 3-pointer from O’Gara with 3:32 remaining cut the North Alabama lead to 57-54, sending a charge through the crowd of 604.
The most critical sequence of the game followed immediately. On the ensuing possession, North Alabama’s Sofia Ceppellotti, a 6-1 forward from Udine, Italy, converted a tough layup to push the lead back to five. After a West Georgia miss, the Lions worked the clock before Alexsandra Alvarado drove and scored while being fouled with 2:54 left. Her free throw completed the three-point play, extending the lead to 62-54 and forcing a West Georgia timeout.
West Georgia had one final opportunity in the closing seconds. Down 65-60 after a Jasmine Jones three-pointer, the Wolves forced a turnover and had multiple looks at a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game. Sydne Tolbert secured an offensive rebound and kicked it out, but Grace O’Gara’s potential three-point attempt was blocked by Ceppellotti with six seconds left, sealing the victory for the Lions.
Beyond Criswell, North Alabama received key contributions from its interior players. India Howard, a 6-0 forward from Coppell, Texas, scored 10 points and recorded a crucial block in the final minutes. Ceppellotti finished with 11 points, three assists and two blocks, including the game-sealing one. Jazzy Klinge added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
For West Georgia, Destiny Jones, a 5-9 forward from Louisville, Kentucky, posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmine Jones added 12 points. The Wolves were hampered by 14 turnovers and 22-of-62 shooting from the field.
Statistically, the game was a matchup of defensive grit. North Alabama posted an offensive rating of 83.5 points per 100 possessions, while West Georgia managed just 80.4. The Lions won despite committing 17 turnovers and recording only four assists, relying on a 38-30 advantage in points in the paint and their stifling early defense.
The victory snapped a two-game road losing streak for North Alabama in conference play. West Georgia, which had been projected as a significant favorite by advanced metrics, saw its two-game win streak end.
Both teams return to ASUN action on Saturday. North Alabama travels to face Eastern Kentucky, while West Georgia heads to Austin Peay. The two teams will meet again in a rematch in Florence, Alabama, on February 27.
