Preview: Xavier Looks to Avenge Close Loss at Saint John’s
NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Saint John’s Red Storm will look to complete a regular-season sweep and solidify their standing in the Big East when they host the Xavier Musketeers in a women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
Saint John’s (17-7, 6-5 Big East) edged Xavier 66-64 on Jan. 17 in Cincinnati, a result both teams remember well. The Red Storm have won three of their last five, most recently a 62-57 road victory at Providence on Jan. 31. Daniela Abies starred in that win, posting 16 points and 11 rebounds. The forward has been a consistent presence, averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds over her last three games.
Xavier (11-11, 4-7) arrives in New York coming off a confidence-building 63-59 home win over Butler on Sunday. The Musketeers are seeking their first winning streak since late December and aim to climb back to .500 in conference play.
The matchup features two of the league’s recent standout performers. Xavier’s Vivien Nejašmić is coming off a season-best performance, pouring in 19 points with six rebounds and five assists in the win over Butler. Her play will be critical for the Musketeers’ offense.
Saint John’s, however, holds the advantage in the frontcourt with Abies, whose double-double against Providence highlighted her two-way impact. Her battle with Xavier’s interior players, including MacKenzie Givens (18 points vs. Butler), will be a key factor.
The Red Storm have been strong at home this season, while Xavier has struggled on the road, losing four straight away games since a win at Georgetown on Jan. 4. Saint John’s won the first meeting this season despite a quiet scoring night from Abies, who had 10 points. Jailah Donald and Janeya Grant combined for 27 points in that victory.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Following this game, Saint John’s will host Seton Hall on Saturday, while Xavier travels to face Providence on Sunday.
