Broncos Dominate Redhawks in Wire-to-Wire Victory
SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Santa Clara Broncos delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance, overwhelming the Seattle Redhawks 93-59 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday night at Redhawk Center.
From the opening tip, which Ava Schmidt won for Santa Clara, the Broncos established a pace and defensive intensity that Seattle could not match. The visitors built an 18-11 lead after the first quarter and expanded it to 43-25 by halftime, effectively putting the game out of reach before the intermission. The lead ballooned to 34 points in the fourth quarter as Santa Clara cruised to its 17th win of the season against five losses. Seattle fell to 5-13.
The most important part of the game was Santa Clara’s stifling first-half defense, which created a deficit too large for Seattle to ever realistically challenge. The Broncos forced 10 first-half turnovers, converting them into 12 points, and held the Redhawks to just 25 points on 10-of-33 shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Seattle’s offensive struggles were epitomized by a 3-for-19 performance from three-point range for the game. Conversely, Santa Clara’s offense operated with high efficiency, posting an offensive rating of 112.5 points per 100 possessions, fueled by balanced scoring and a 13-for-37 effort from beyond the arc.
Ashley Hawkins led a potent Santa Clara attack with 16 points and four assists in 26 minutes. Delainey Miller provided a major spark off the bench, scoring a game-high 19 points in just 20 minutes of action. Ava Schmidt, a native of nearby Sammamish, Washington, added 16 points and two blocks, while Kylee Fox contributed 15 points. For Seattle, Ella Brubaker scored 16 points and Andjela Bigovic finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Chloe Emanga added 11 points off the bench.
The Broncos dominated key statistical categories, out-rebounding Seattle 48-36, including a 15-9 edge on the offensive glass that led to 18 second-chance points. Santa Clara’s defense tallied nine steals and four blocks, disrupting Seattle’s offensive flow throughout the night. The Redhawks managed only five assists as a team, a testament to the Broncos’ disruptive perimeter defense.
Santa Clara’s victory continued a strong stretch of play, having won four of its last five games. The Broncos also completed a season sweep of Seattle, having defeated the Redhawks 94-65 in California just over three weeks prior. Seattle, which has lost three straight and seven of its last eight, will look to regroup quickly as it hosts Saint Mary’s on Saturday. Santa Clara returns home to face Washington State next Thursday.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 483. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Santa Clara entered with a 98 percent probability to win, a projection the Broncos fulfilled with a comprehensive performance on both ends of the floor.
